Not sure why while searching for a cake recipe, there would be one saying to use Boxed cake mix!!??
Ha Ha!! A friend of ours has been making this cake and bringing it to parties and such, and even though everyone loves this cake, she won't give us the recipe. Ha Ha! Found it, (and I wasn't even looking for it, heeheehee). Now I'm gonna make several copies and pass them out!
Amazing! I used cool whip to save time and didn't toast the coconut. It was a hit! Will definitely make again.
I am compelled to write a review on this cake ( my first review by the way) because I thought it was the most disgusting cake I've ever tasted. I made it for my parents anniversary because my parents love coconut. My husband said it tasted lie hat he would think cake in jail would taste like! He was right on. It was waaaaaaay to sweet. It was just terrible. I followed all the directions to a T. I can't say enough how bad it was. We threw half of it away. There were 8 adults there and they all agreed it is definitely NOT better than sex. Even my 91 year old grandmother!!!
I used an orange cake mix and with the pineapple and vanilla cream, it was FABULOUS! Wow!
Very good. I added pineapple to the cake batter also. My husband loved it.
Lip smacking good cake!!! I also added pineapple to the batter since my husband loves pineapple. I heard him brag on this cake to his best friend. So, hands down, you made me a hero!!! It is awesomely delicious!!!!
Made this cake twice, I added coconut rum and everyone loved it. The second time I used shredded coconut instead of toasted and I think it's much better. The toasted is crunchy if you like that but also somewhat dry. I also cut down a little on the sugar and used French Vanilla cake mix. The next time I will use a touch more pineappple or maybe a pineapple cake mix.
    Good recipe. Everyone like it.
Very easy and very good, making again on the 4th!
This was good but isn't as good as Almost better than sex cake (Chocolate cake but I'm a chocolate lover. Good combination of flavors and It was very easy to make.
I made this for my boyfriend for his Bday. He loved it, I loved it it but better than sex, I don't think so. For those that say it is, your missing out 8...............................................>
Very good! made as directed and family/friends loved it.
This cake is delicious! It was really fluffy and moist. Will deinitely be making this again! Loved it!
I made it in a rush and didn't add anything else after the pudding and my mom and fiance couldn't get enough, i'm sure that when i make it like its suppose to be it will be better
I made this last night, me and my husband both thought that it had little to no flavor. I was really hoping this was going to be better than it was. I followed the recipe as dirrected and it looked pretty, but I don't think I would make it again.
I somewhat agree. I've been tweaking this recipe. So I added coconut rum to the pineapple. I used a coconut pudding and made it with coconut milk and a pineapple cake mix. Much more flavorful/
It was good; but the name is misleading, only because if you're doing it right, it's not better than sex! If you love coconut and pineapple, you'll eat this up.
Oh with out a doubt... We are pineapple upsidedown cake fans but this was elements... of oldschool upsidedown cake... and beyond totally enjoyed this... truly better than ???
I followed the recipe and we thought it was light and perfect !!
I add chopped pecans to the pudding for more texture
I don't understand all the excitement about this cake. Definitely not one of the best cakes I have had before...there are much better cake recipes online than this one. This cake was light and tasty but not impressive. Just your average cake. I give it 2 stars because the recipe is so simple...I prefer to make cakes from scratch. Wouldn't make it again.
Wouldnt say it is better than sex, but certainly very delicious. The more pineapple and whipped creme the better. Thanks Paula!
It was really good and I would make it again, but it certainly isn't the best cake ever. It is, however, too easy to eat too much.
This was very good, very light, and VERY easy to make. I can't say that it was AMAZING, but it was really good. The recipe calls for too much sugar for my taste. Next time I will boil the pineapples with only 1/2 cup of sugar and keep the 1/3 cup of sugar for the whipped cream the same. I think the cake would also go well with slices of strawberry on top. Yummy and easy recipe!
Absolutely awesome! Thanks for all the tips, including TJ cake mix and pastry cream. I made one beginner mistake of impatience...pastry cream got a little lumpy at the last second, but I got lots of compliments anyway cuz no one noticed. I may try to cut the cake thru the middle for 2 sheets next time and put the pastry cream inside, but it's most definitely yummy!
This cake was amazing! I made a few adjustments that I felt made it a bit better:
I did not boil pineapples with sugar, it would of been WAY too sweet.
I used a french vanilla cake mix rather than yellow.
Also, I added a teaspoon of vanilla to the whipped cream mixture.
Great Recipe! I didn't add sugar to the pineapples after reading the reviews that it was too sweet. I also used sugar free cake batter, sugar free pudding and sugar free cool whip as topping. My daughter decorated it with strawberries on top.
I don't know if it is better than sex, but the competition is close !!! I tried this recipe for my mother's 60th Wedding Aniversary and everyone loved it.
I made this cake for my boyfriends birthday. IT WAS GREAT! The only thing I would have changed though was the pineapple factor. I would have either added more pineapple or done without it all together. When eating this cake we would all randomly get random little bites of pineapple and it just wasnt enough or shouldnt have been apart of it at all. My boyfriend (who is a chef suggested adding pineapple to the cake mixture itself, which I think will help. Other than that this cake was great and I would gladly make it again, I would just do without the pineapple or add more. Great cake! Thanks Paula Dean!
Best. Cake. EVER!!! Wow. Everyone at work having fits over it. My boss emailed me: "it's like I've won the lottery!!" Best at least 24 hours after making. I may try another reviewer's tip about using brown sugar with the pineapple next time, that sounds scrumptious...
Super good and very easy. Although I changed a few things here and there. I changed the presentation into a layer cake, filling the cake with a thick layer of custard and the pineapple mixture then topped cake with the whipped cream and toasted coconut flakes. I also used homemade pastry cream instead of boxed pudding. It only takes 10 minutes to knock out a recipe of pastry cream and the taste difference is well worth it.
Some notes on ingredients: I used Trader Joe's vanilla cake mix. It's really good with a nice hit of real vanilla flavour and vanilla bean flecks. I don't like the strong fake vanilla flavour and fake butter flavour in supermarket cake mixes--it tends to overwhelm everything else. I also like to use natural coconut flakes from the bulk section at Whole Foods (or any health food store instead of Baker's over sweetened ultra-processed coconut. The flavour and texture is much more true.
