Ingredients

1 (18.25-ounce) box yellow cake mix, plus ingredients to prepare
1 (20-ounce) can crushed pineapple
1 1/3 cups sugar
1 (3.4-ounce) box French vanilla pudding, plus ingredients to prepare
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
1 cup flaked, sweetened toasted coconut

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Prepare yellow cake mix as directed using a greased 13 by 9 by 2-inch pan and bake for 30 to 35 minutes. While cake is baking, combine the pineapple and 1 cup of sugar in a saucepan, and bring to a boil over medium heat stirring constantly. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.

Remove cake from oven and using a fork, pierce holes into cake. Pour pineapple mixture over hot cake and set aside.

Prepare pudding according to package directions. Spread pudding over cake and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled. Whip heavy cream and remaining sugar until stiff. Cover top of cake with whipped cream and sprinkle toasted coconut on top.

Hey Paula, My mother and me bake a Better Than Sex Cake simiular to yours. We add maraschino cherrys. Put about ten or... fifteen on top. Keep Fridged until served. This cake was so delicious!! The first time I made it, I thought, I may be the only one who likes this so I made it in... advance just to taste it.....................It was THE BEST CAKE I HAD EVER EATEN! It's almost sinful how goooooood this cake is for so little work. I love to bake but rarely eat the desserts I make but let... me tell you I had a piece after dinner...... Shredded the recipe

I made this cake and was very disappointed. Besides having problems with the whipped frosting, the cake ended up tasting... extremely sweet. I like sweet treats, but this dessert was too sweet for me to handle. The problem with the whipped frosting was it would not stiffen. I had soft watery frosting. I looked for help online and tried adding powered sugar to the mix, which did not help. I also froze the frosting batter, which did work, but when thawed would run. I ended up removing the frosting and leaving a super thin layer of it on top. When we tasted the cake, oh my, this was extremely sweet much more than we prefer. I think the pineapple/sugar glaze put it over the top. I hate the idea of throwing away food so we ended up donating the rest of the cake to someone in need who might appreciate it. In the past I've made other recipes from Paula Dean and have also been disappointed. She obviously has a fan base, and many people do find her recipes delicious, but I think I will stop making her recipes and stick to those Chefs with whom I've had success with in the past (ina and Giada).
