It was all sugar. Kids would like it but I think most adults would not enjoy the different consistencies nor the sweetness.

This fabulous cake was introduced to me at a sewing circle tea party. I have made it with the addition of chopped pecans. This has become the most requested cake at family gatherings (even more than my homemade lemon cake. It is "lick the pan" good.

Ok, so I was looking for a southern type of cake to take to a casual dinner party. Ribs, greens, etc on the menu. I saw the name of the cake and thought THAT is the cake I have to make! It was soooo easy to make! And it was divine! I love anything that is light and fluffy and has a tropical taste to it. The name alone had EVERYONE laughing and joking and it was the first dessert they all got in line to try. Everyone loved it and finished it off with licking the cake dish. I will try it with some of the other suggestions like strawberries and oranges. Thank you Paula! It was a hit! :

I added dark rum before I topped it with the pineapple mixture. I also did not add sugar to the whip cream as it's already sweet enough. I wouldn't use the store bought cake again, but besides that, it was delicious.

I have been making this cake for years, but with a slight variation. The recipe passed to me uses an un-sharpened pencil to make the holes. I cover the pencil with a little plastic wrap to ensure cleanliness. The holes are larger than what you get with a fork and this allows the pineapple to get into the cake a bit better. Then after adding the pineapple I sprinkle the cake with pecans before adding the pudding. I typically use cool whip and then on top, I sprinkle more chopped pecans with the pineapple. This is the cake we had for our 10th wedding anniversary party and it was made in a half sheet cake size. I used maraschino cherries to make a heart on top of the cake. It is one of our favorites!!

3.5 stars. It is good, light and tasty. The texture was not too loose or watery at all. I guess using the yellow store-bought cake mix is what just makes it not-the-best-cake-in-the-world. If I make this again, I think I would make a homemade cake instead of the store-bought kind.
