    True Southern Standard Bearer

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I can always count on Ms. Deen to be authentically Southern, However, in the tradition of Southern ingenuity, I combine... organic chicken broth and good quality clam broth as my base, which will add a natural salinity. Much more flavor than just plain water (which I seldom use for anything, as there is no flavor in water). The combination makes a marked difference. And, in the spirit of the original recipe, in addition to the original ingredient list, I use whatever else looks good at Motts Channel Seafood in Wrightsville (or, Whole Foods if I'm in Raleigh). Using whatever is fresh and in season is more essential than following the list of ingredients. This is a creative and inventive creation and it is always fun to see how it evolves in our family, depending upon the season and availability. But, whatever the evolutionary outcome, we always pay homage to our Southern heritage (Old Bay only in our family). NOTRead more

    Add some Crab

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
This was a great recipe. I'm from Jacksonville, Fl and live on the river. So seafood is right out my door. We catch our own... shrimp, crab and fish. So I guess I had an extra kick with really fresh seafood. This recipe is even better with WHOLE LIVE Blue Crabs, Snow or Dungeness...Add them before the shrimp though because it takes longer for the crabs to cook. A dozen of Blue Crabs takes about 10-12 minutes to cook depending on size. Also add, celery stalks, onion, bell pepper...etc. Experiment I love my boils spicy...so try old bay boil bag, red pepper, hot sauce...taste till it gets to the right heat for you..I hope you enjoy.Read more

    Oh my !!!!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
Wow!!! Made this for my sons b-day (he was the only child there...1st b-day) I used 4 gallons of water and 30 teaspoons of... old bay seasoning. I used 3 lbs large easy peel shrimp, 3 kielbasa shrimp, 24 new potatoes, 8 or nine corn on the cobs split into 3rds. I also added 2 or 2 cloves of garlic, 2 lemons cut in half and one white onion split in half. We had bought a special out door cooker for this but ended up placing the cooking pot on the stove so it would come to a boil faster. My company who comprised a wide variety of personalitys all LOVED this. What a hit!!! There where 8 adults and there was plenty of food with a little left over (which I will be enjoying for luch today). I served this with sourdough bread and a fruit and dip tray. I felt a little uncomfortable trying something I had never even eaten or seen in person before but it sounded so good and like such fun, I went for it and what a easy and fun suprise for us all. Be brave and just go for it, I doubt you can mess this one up!!!!Read more
