    Midwestern Memory! Thank you, Paula!

I grew up in Southern Ohio and there was a diner which served a pie called "old-fashioned cream pie" and it was my favorite. ... I have never had it again - but have searched for it...and here it is! I followed Lora's suggestions and found that it worked perfectly. I did whisk the filling quite a bit - which may be the middle ground between whipping the cream and not. I also remember that the diner used both cinnamon and nutmeg on the top - but I think that is up to each person.Read more

    Perfection, if done this way...

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
Ok, here's what I did, and it was perfection. I'm telling you, this pie is one of the best pies I've ever tasted. As for... sugar cream pies, nothing can beat it. Here's what I did... 1. I used whipping cream (like the recipe called for -- no exceptions) and WHOLE milk. I did NOT whip the cream. 2. I added a Pinch of Salt and one Tablespoon Real Vanilla. 3. I stirred until it was well combined. 4. I just used a refrigerated pie dough, and I did NOT use a deep dish pie pan. My pie plate is not deep at all. The prepared pie dough crust and that shallow pan worked perfectly. 5. I had foil around the rim of the pie for the ENTIRE baking time to prevent burning. 6. (I used a dark pie dish, so I had to lower the oven temp a little. If you don't use a dark dish, follow the oven temperature like the recipe instructs.) I baked the pie for 10 minutes at 425 degrees. I then lowered the temperature to 325 and baked for 45 minutes. I then turned off the oven and let the pie continue baking for another 15 minutes. My pie set up beautifully at room temperature and didn't even need chilling to completely set up. I could not believe how easy the preparation was for this pie and how fantastic it turned out. We found it best served at room temperature with no garnish at all... it was so divine, no garnish was needed.Read more

    Needs Tweaking but Good Recipe

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
Since I don't bake many pies I didn't know which crust to use. So I had two pies instead of one. Now I know to use a deep... dish. After reading the other reviews I used heavy whipping cream and whipped it. Then I added the other ingredients and used a mixer to blend for a few seconds. Since I had two pies the baking time was reduced. After 10 minutes the crust and the top was a little too brown so I reduced the heat to 300 and in another 10 minutes they had set. I cooled them then put them in the fridge. They turned out great. I will reduce the sugar the next time because it was a bit too sweet for me.Read more

Didn't set up - tasted like a pie crust full of sweetened condensed milk

Rated: 2 stars out of 5
I should have read these other reviews, it looks as though the instructions need to be updated. Sounds like this only works... if you whip the cream, which the instructions don't say to do. I threw out most of it, and I won't bother trying it again.Read more

    Skeptical,,,,,but turned out great!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I just made this pie for the first time. I was a little skeptical after reading some of the comments on the problems people... had encountered. I did make a few changes to the recipe and my pie turned out fabulous!! After mixing the ingredients in a bowl, I then trasfered them to a small pot and heated it over low heat for a few minutes to help with the thickening. I also added a tablespoon of vanilla extract and a dash of cinnamon. I then poured into the pie crust, dotted with butter and sprinkled on nutmeg. I followed the same cooking temperatures and bake times the recipe called for. The pie tured out awesome!! Hope this information helped. Enjoy!!Read more
