sorry these were far to greasy, the trumpets were difficult to manage and the filling was too sweet and tasted just like shortening, wont be making these again

My son and I were watching the episode with this recipe and he asked if we could make them. So he and I made our first batch together. If I had not watched the episode and only read the recipe with an 'easy' rating I would have thought I was doing something wrong. This recipe is not for the faint of heart chef. It is worth it, but time comsuming and not simple. And this is coming from one who LOVES to bake and cook.

These are the best cookies I have ever made. They are a bit tricky at first but your soon to get the hang of how quickly you really have to work to roll these babies. I don't make it a habit of telling anyone whats in them unless they really NEED to know. I have done these in cones and tubes and both are great, just depends on how much filling you want. The cones have about a 3rd more filling then the tubes!
The reason they get only 4 stars and not 5 is because how much fat they have in them. You really can't eat these often if you practice good eating habits. LOL!

The trumpet concept is great! It's a beatiful addition to a party table and a unique cookie to bring to any gathering. This is, however, not an everyday kind of cookie. I would only do these once in a while on special occassions. I have to agree with others about the filling. When I whatched this episode on tv and when Paula said "crisco shortening" I immediately thought of those wedding cakes that have that awful icing all over them that everyone scrapes off the cake. If Paula said to use a stick of butter it would have sounded only half bad. I think I will stick with a cream cheese type filling with added fruit or other flavoring. No Crisco for me thank you.

Thanks to Erin's review, the process of making the trumpets was easy - at least easier than following the instructions in the recipe. The trumpets themselves are very tasty, but the filling leaves a lot to be desired. The Crisco flavor comes out clearly, and I cut down the amount I put in by 1/2 cup. Also, I used baking sugar, a finer grade of sugar, and the granuals were still present. I'd use powdered sugar next time. There are other options for fillings that would be wonderful; chocolate mousse, whipped cream, to name a few.

The cookie trumpet is great!! The filling is nothing but sugar-laced grease and fat.
How could ANYONE even want to injest this?
Yummie--give me a spoon of Crisco and make
sure to sprinkle it with sugar--oh! add a
bit of butter for good measure while you're at it!!! Mmmm good. Cheers!!!

The cookies turned out and were very delicious and everyone loved them, but they took me all afternoon to make. I had to make the trumpets in 2's and 3's because they got brittle so quickly, and it took several tries before the cookies turned out.

These were a big hit at a wedding shower I gave for my daughter. It was a Victorian theme and these were perfect.
