You people have no idea what Mississippi Mud Cake is supposed to be like and you might wanna research it before you post a bad review because of your ignorance. Paula's version here is beautiful and delicious. If you don't like sweets or butter, I suggest you stay away from Paula's recipes in general. But if you enjoy true Southern dishes like your Grandma used to make, use hers!!! This cake is wonderful, I do agree that the baking time is off by about 10-15 minutes, make sure your cake isn't too gooey in the middle, however a bit gooeyness is delightful! Thanks Paula!

The icing is just overbearing. The cake itself is really nice, but in the future.. I'd omit the marshmallows, and make a lighter icing.

In the directions, the part that states "Bring the butter, oil, cocoa, and 1/4 cup water to a boil in a saucepan", is incorrect. You cannot add the 1/4 water to the chocolate mixture, it causes the chocolate to separate. I found this out the hard way. Had to dump the first batch. On the second try, I added the water and oil to the dry ingredients, and everything worked out fine. The cake tasted great.

I made this cake and everyone loved it. It had a great chocolate taste, not too sweet and very moist. You will need to keep this recipe. However, the instructions are not the clearest. To me the beginning of the recipe is written awkwardly. I combined the sugar, salt and flour in one bowl. Then made the chocolate mixture and added it to the flour mixture but did not mix the two together. Then I beat the eggs , baking soda, buttermilk and vanilla in another bowl and added it to the bowl with the flour and chocolate mixtures. Also it says to cool the cake "a bit". What does this mean? A minute or two or 10 to 15 minutes. I let the cake cool 5 minutes and then added the marshmallows. Finally, the icing did not cover the entire cake as well as I would have liked. The next time I make this cake I will add 3 additional tablespoons of milk to the icing and will pour the icing over the cake as soon as it comes off the stove. For those of us that have not baked for a long time recipes need to be very clear. Besides the issues with the way the recipe was written, this is a great cake that I will make over and over.

I baked your cake and it was delicious. Everyone loved it. I did have to bake it a little longer but other than that it went perfect. The icing tastes just like fudge. It was great. Thanks Paula for a great desert.

This is by far the best (so moist chocolate cake I have ever had. I think the sweetness is perfect and I used a whole bag of marshmallows just like it says coupled with the icing in the recipe. And to anyone who does think this cake is to sweet I would say use a different frosting, buttercream would be great on this versatile cake, or drink a lot of milk with it. And hey its from the episode titled "Sweet Tooth".

    Thanks Paula!

PS: Was shocked to see it only had an overall rating of 4 stars.

This is a good receipe, but it's really sweet...maybe a bit too sweet for me and my husband, I think it's the frosting that puts it over the top Also, the cooking time is a bit short, I had to add about 10 minutes onto the time for the cake portion.

I love Paula Deen , I made this recipe to take on a picnic with the family. I was hoping it would be enough to feed 20 people but I ended up with 1/2 the pan left over because no one liked it. It had lots of my favorite ingredients but it was not at all good. The topping would be good to dress up a pan of box made brownies.
