I really really loved this recipe. only instead of using No. 7 Jack Daniels I used a Crown Royal. I also put 2Tbs. of corn starch. Turn out great. using 3C. of water helps to cover the sweetness over your yams.

Everyone loved the "sweet potatoes". I used the cinnamon stick and ground nutmeg, but I also added a bit of vanilla. I reduced the amount of water and cooked boiled the sauce longer. I used the red garnet yam varietals. I've passed the recipe on to my sister-in-law. Thanks for an awesome recipe.

This is my second year making the dish for Thanksgiving. It is a big hit! And I love how the kitchen smells with the cinnamon stick and orange peels simmering in all the yummy brown sugar and butter. It still takes good a week later too! We added a little fluff to the top of it last night for dinner but such a great recipe! I will be making this dish many years to come.

Unfortunately this was the worst dish of my dinner. I struggled with this recipe as written - and my biggest mistake may have been cooking the yams but not the sauce the day before.
I started 1.5 hours before dinner, and half way through realized the sauce had not thickened at all. I boiled and boiled the sauce to reduce to something useable - working against the clock as the turkey was resting. I thew half the liquid out, ladeled some onto the yams as they heated, furiously boiled the rest down with added brown sugar, and lost the whole beautiful sauce flavor as a result.
How about cutting the water in half? I would think the sugar will still easily go into solution...

It was terrific. Made it for Thanksgiving, without the 'Ol #7, and everyone enjoyed it just the same.

Thank you Paula and Jack #7! I've tried a new sweet potato recipe every year for Thanksgiving and I will search no longer. This was a HUGE HIT! I baked the sweet potatoes and made the sauce the day before, keeping them separate. Poured the sauce over the sweet potatoes when I was ready to bake them. I did follow the suggestions of 2.5 cups of water and adding 2T corn starch. Perfecfto!

Great recipe! Everybody loved it! However, I did had to modify it. I added 2.5 cups of water instead of 3. I added 2tbs of corn starch and dissolved in 4tbs of cold water, poured it over the yams before putting it in the oven. It helped to thicken the sauce. I did not add the bourbon and the strip of orange peel. I added mini marshmellows over the top 15min before taking it out of the oven. It came out delicious.....!

Big hit last night! We will make this again. The Jack Daniels give the yams a different and great taste. We made this a day ahead.
Edit - made this again for TG 2011. Big hit again. I only made half the syrup. I baked the yams the day before and just poured the syrup over them and heated enough for them to be hot. they didnt need as much time as specified. YUM!

FANTASTIC EASY RECIPE!!!!! I cooked it for thanksgiving and my husband and my husband thought it was great. I was worried it would be really sweet but it was PERFECT. My grandma who never likes to try anything new loved it! I didn't have bourbon on hand and didn't want to buy a bottle of it, so I bought a couple of mini bottles and only needed to use one which was the perfect amount. They didn't have Jack Daniels in the mini size as recommended so I bought what was available which was "Maker's Mark". Never heard of it but the potatoes were Yum!

Too runny,,,even with reducing the water by half and adding the cornstarch. Won't be making these again. Oh well. Smelled great and easy, but I'll be finding another recipe.
