Ingredients

  • 2 pounds stew beef
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 clove garlic, peeled
  • 1 or 2 bay leaves
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Dash ground allspice or ground cloves
  • 3 large carrots, sliced
  • 3 ribs celery, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

Directions

Brown meat in hot oil. Add water, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, bay leaves, onion, salt, sugar, pepper, paprika, and allspice. Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours. Remove bay leaves and garlic clove. Add carrots and celery. Cover and cook 30 to 40 minutes longer. To thicken gravy, remove 2 cups hot liquid. Using a separate bowl, combine 1/4 cup water and cornstarch until smooth. Mix with a little hot liquid and return mixture to pot. Stir and cook until bubbly.

Comfort with a capital C! (but gets an A)

This stew is perfect made as is. The spices & good beef make the perfect broth. It's a great combination that allows the... flavors of simple food really shine. Thanks Paula - perfect on a cold, rainy, Pacific Northwest Sunday evening!Read more

    Not Enough!!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I made this for my family of four, and it was barely enough. It was absolutely delicious, though, and i'd recommend it to... anyone. Just be sure you make enough. I'd also recommend making double portions for a family of five to six, depending on how much they eat, and maybe add potatoes and more broth. Overall it was excellent.Read more

One pot, quick and easy meal

I also used beef stock instead of water, added some potatoes and I actually didn't have any Worcestershire, so I used... Balsamic vinegar instead and it came out tasting just like the beef stew I remember from when I was a kid. Also turning out to be delicious as leftovers!Read more

    Just terrific

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
This really was delicious but there's no way this would feed 6 adults. It barely fed 4 normal adults so I will definitely... double this next time. I used beef stock instead of water to boost the flavor. I was surprised that there was no potatoes so I will do that next time as some reviewers have suggested. Great job Paula!Read more
