If I could give it 0 stars I would. It's a good start but needs s lot to make it an actual stew. I'm a young mom trying stew for the first time.... .lm now reading all reviews and realizing anyone who gave it 4 stars added a lot to make this stew... Watch out. I ended up having to call for take out....

This recipe is so easy! I love the fact that it stands up to some tweeking as well. I use a whole carton of beef stock instead of water, add some tomato sauce, potatoes, and carrots. Yummy!! Hubby asks for it ALL THE TIME! =D

I was looking for an easy to make, tasty beef stew a while back and found this one. We have been making it regularly ever since. What I like about this recipe is that it great as is and can easily be tweaked to our taste. The meat turns out perfect and is perfect to bring to work the next day for a comforting lunch.
Every time I make it I have a thought of thanks for Paula for this recipe as it has become one of our go-to meals....surprising that there is no butter to be added :

I made this in a crockpot and cooked it on low for about 9 hours. Other than that and deglazing my pan with beef broth and water and pouring it into the crockpot, I followed the recipe exactly. This beef stew tastes okay. The meat turned out well but the overall flavor of the dish is very bland. I tried adding Lawry's, onion powder and garlic powder, and more Worcestershire sauce, but it's still very bland. It is flavorless. Maybe I should add a bit of white vinegar to brighten it up? I wouldn't make this recipe again. It is edible. It isn't bad, but isn't particularly good either.

I made this yesterday. It is VERY similar to an old recipe I have. It is EXCELLENT! I did use about 1/2 tsp. of Allspice instead of a dash (love the stuff :. My fiancee' took it for lunch at BNSF and texted and said it was EXCELLENT too! I agree with a comment below--you don't have to thicken it if you don't want to. It depends on what kind of gravy you prefer--brown or cream. I prefer cream gravy. I make home made cream gravy constantly, so it was a "no-brainer" for me. Believe me--this recipe is OLD TIME and the BEST!!!! Thank you Paula Dean!
Oh--P.S. Do not remove any grease or remove 2 cups of liquid. It is YOUR flavoring! Also, if you want a "melt-in-your-mouth" meat, buy a nice Beef Chuck Boneless Steak. Cut into chunks. YUUUUMMYYYYYYY!!!! I also added Flour instead of Cornstarch.

Loved the simplicity. I added wine and more liquid because there was no way it would have enough gravy when it is complete. I did not have to "thicken it". I made a few additions and left out the garlic (allergy issues, but it turned out yummy. Thank you Paula Deen for a gluten free basic recipe.

This gave me the basic blueprint that I needed, but is nowhere near complete. I tossed the beef in flour, browning sauce, and ground black pepper prior to seering it, then used a cup of water to deglaze the pan and added that to the two cups of water that the recipe calls for. I increased all of the spices, and threw in a mixture of small red and yellow potatoes. Lacking wine, I added a couple cubes of beef bouillon, and a dash of white vinegar to punch it up. I also cubed up some leftover steaks we had from the weekend, and threw them in the pot as well. Like every other reviewer, I added extra water when I added the veggies. As far as thickening it goes, I just whisked together equal parts water and cornstarch, then added it in towards the end. Worked just fine. In total, I think I cooked it for an extra hour than what the recipe calls for. By its self, this recipe deserves about one star. With my additions, it gets five. ; So I settled on a happy three. Cheers!
