Exactly what I have been looking for! Used beef broth instead of water & added potatoes. As the kids walked in the door one by one, they all said MMMMMMM! What's for dinner!?!?! Next time will add some different veggies, we dont have celery lovers here. Maybe green beans or peas with carrots & potatoes. Mushrooms would be good too! I agree that it does need a bit more kick but great recipe that can be altered anyway you like. On my go-to list!

I LOVE this meal. It's my go-to recipe for a cold day. : From my picky 4 year old to my 75 year old father, we all LOVE it.

I haven't even tried a bite of my stew yet - I already know it's going to be outstanding. I pretty much followed the recipe- (love the spices it calls for and tweaked it a bit- put in some mushrooms, corn, green beans and potatoes. My house smells soooooooo good!! I'm going to taste it but I'm not going to eat it until tomorrow because I like my stews and soups one day old. : Thanks for posting this. I'm sure I will use it again.

This recipe hit the spot, the only alteration i made was i dredged the meat in flour before browning, added extra beef bullion cubes, added potatoe and peas with the celery and carrot. I will make this again and again. Really good.

This is a great base recipe. Like many of the other reviewers, I used beef stock instead of water. I also added potatoes and mushrooms, used the Allspice instead of the cloves, and Hungarian sweet paprika instead of regular paprika. Delicious. Will make again with these revisions.

Great recipe! The family loved it and really hit the spot. Instead of 1 tsp. of Salt I used 1 tsp. Bouillon just for a little extra flavor and to try to control the sodium without using the beef broth that others mentioned. This is a delicious stew! Thank you Paula!

I've been making this stew for years and it gets better everytime I make it. Substitute 2 bottles of red wine for the water and the flavor is outstanding! Thanks Paula!

I am so happy with how this turned out. I did make a few alterations, used beef broth (low sodium instead of water. I doubled the worcestershire sauce, used 2 cloves of garlic, used ground cloves because I didn't have allspice, added a few dashes of seasoned salt and added 8 small red potatoes when I added the veggies. For the pepper I added to taste and simmered it for an hour longer and it was delicious! The meat literally melts in your mouth. I suggest if you have the time to get a good roast (I used a boneless chuck roast and cutting the meat yourself.

Excellent! Made per the recipe but used beef broth and added cubed potatoes. Excellent winter stew! Will definitely make again...
