I was never a big fan of stew until I tried this one. Try it you will like it. I did add potatoes as I did not make the casserole. We sopped up the delicious gravy with sourdough bread. Time to go walk!!!!

I made this for the family along with the Potato Casserole. They loved it. The only changes I made were I bought a good cut of beef and cut it up myself and then used my slow cooker.

This is a keeper. Excellent flavor. I did add 3 small red potatoes quartered, except for not removing the garlic clove, I did not change a thing with the seasonings. Thank you Paula!

This is the ultimate comfort food. I used low-sodium beef broth instead of water and added about 10 small red potatoes, quartered. The result was very satisfying. I have tried many stew recipes over the years and this one is the best. If you are looking for a fancy gourmet-style stew, this is not the recipe you are looking for. This is basic down home cooking at its best.

First of all, the first hour was absolute agony. The smell was so good I kept on opening the lid(shhh! don't tell Paula. The taste, WOW! I did not have a side dish, this was enough food for my family. Bedtime was no hassle after eating this stew.

Great flavor! The only thing missing is chuncks of potatoes.

I have never made beef stew before, although I love cooking, and i simply love comfort foods! Thought I'd give this a try and I am glad I did. I took some advice from other reviewers and added potatoes, but only because I ran out of time to make the potato casserole (which I'm making tomorrow night by the way!. Also, I was wanted to add beef broth instead of water, but when I realized I was out I substiuted chicken broth instead. It was delicious. I have no doubt that this this stew would have been perfect "as is", but we are all different and like to add/subtract when using a recipe. This was low maintenance and will be a regular in our home, as are many of Paula's recipes. Thanks Paula, and Merry Christmas to you and your family!

I thought this recipe was easy to follow, as a beginning cook. I added a little bit more water than was called for to cover the beef, which I think was a good move. I also used a dash of picante sauce, cinnamon, and ground red pepper, instead of Worcestershire sauce. I left out the onions and used flour instead of cornstarch. My husband and I really like the way it turned out. I think next time I might add some mushrooms. Not adding potatoes makes it less heavy, which we like. This recipe was a good basic recipe to help me develop my own stew recipe.
