Agreed, way too much work! My icing was rock hard and I hadn't even added all the powder sugar the recipe called for. The filling was hard to work and too runny, so my cakes were sliding off one another. :(
However the cake tasted buttery and was very moist.

my first attempt at such a delicious looking cake, everything is pretty easy but make sure you read all the way through and then go back, i messed up the filling by reading line by line instead of reading ahead. My best advice for novices like me or anyone, the most labor intensive thing is the filling make that up ahead of time in the morning then put it in the fridge. And unless you have a professional grade oven (i do not bake one at a time in the middle of the oven. all in all the cake came out great and it was the hit of the party. its usually not the recipe but the person cooking who makes it bad.

A LOT OF WORK!! I saw below that people were having trouble with the filling thickening. I was too at first because I stood in front of the stove for an hour!!! But the trick is to make sure you have enough water in your double boiler, then turn up the heat...it wasn't until I did this then the mixture started to thicken slowly but surely. I let it get thick as pudding then did the next step. One thing I wasn't sure about was, after the adding the cream cheese, should I have whipped it? Because on the color her filling was fluffy and pale. Mine was the color of vanilla pudding. It still tasted good, and the cake was good after assembling. I also only added 5 cups of powdered sugar to the frosting, that was sweet enough for me and my family. Overall, it was still way too much work. This recipe should be modified because it take WAY MORE than 15 minutes to make that filling!!

NOT WORTH IT! This cake took a lot of time to make, which would have been fine if it tasted good! It was not worth the time and effort. The cake itself was dry and heavy and had an odd taste- like butter and flour. The ooey gooey filling took over 30 minutes to thicken, and never really got to a good consistency, especially after adding the cream cheese. The filling had an odd texture and just tasted like butter, I couldn't even taste the orange from orange juice. The frosting was good but wrong for the whole taste of the cake. This cake took a lot of time with no pay off. I could have made 6 delicious desserts in the time it took to make this cake. I was embarrassed once I served it to my family and I will never make this cake again. And I am a good baker and bake often. I am throwing the rest of the cake away and I hate wasting food. It is not even salvageable with ice cream.

This was the worst Food network recipe I've ever tried! I love Paula Deen recipes and use then on a regular basis. I followed the recipe and had no problem with any of the steps however the taste was very disappointing.

This cake was a ton of work for medium satisfaction. My kids enjoyed it although weren't fond of the filling. I found the icing way to sweet and even cut back on the sugar.
I won't be making this one again

I made Paula's Ooey Gooey Butter Layer Cake last Christmas. It was very pretty and very, very, good! My grand daughter immediatley posted a picture of it on FaceBook after taking her first bite. The result was well worth the time and effort (love required to make the cake, frosting, and filling. I am making it again this Christmas!
