Amazingly addictive! However, I found that using a full cup of butter for the batter makes it too rich and cake-like so I do 50/50 butter and butter-flavored Crisco and I get rave reviews from everyone.

These bars are delicious! They are more 'cakey' in texture than a brownie, but that doesn't influence how wonderful these taste. So, a couple of things... I usually substitute or add minor things to make the recipe 'my own.' I added 1 tsp. of vanilla extract to the batter, and instead of doing a cream cheese frosting, I did an icing of 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, 1 tsp. orange extract and about 1/4 cup pineapple juice. (I did not have orange juice on hand. I made fork holes in the brownies and poured the icing over the bars while they were still warm. This made the bars very moist. I also did not use orange peel in the batter. I generally don't think adding the peel makes much difference taste-wise. Real orange extract (not the fake stuff is all you need to give these a wonderful, natural citrus taste. I think these would be equally good with lemon or lime as well.

We LOVE Paula's orange brownies!!! The recipe is perfect as written, but I add a little extra orange zest. Wonderful with the icing, although the grandkids love them without icing. This recipe is a keeper!

This is one of the best desserts I have ever had! The last time I took this to a family gathering, I caught my brother scraping the leftover crumbs off the plate!
