I followed the recipe as is - with 8 oz. cream cheese and used Hershey's bars with almonds for the candies, and regular sugar. I used a 14” oval dish. The cake was a hit because it was moist, chocolaty, and had tons of texture. However, if I were to make this cake again, there are a couple things I would change. Forgo the glaze! Make half of the cream mixture. Forgo the crushed candies.

I use a 10 1/2 x 14 1/2 inch glass cake pan (rather than the 9x13 pan in the recipe and have no volcanic activity in the oven. Totally recommend this cake if you like it sweet! I made this cake for a birthday party of teenage boys yesterday and they devoured over half of the cake (which tells you how big the recipe is!

This is now my favorite cake. 4X and 10X refer to the size of the confectioners sugar particles. 10X is just more fine. Either will work. :

It is wonderful. Everyone loves this cake. I would like to know what the 2 cups 4. or 10x sugar means. Everytime I make this cake I question what I'm doing wrong. Thank You.

Do you add the glaze to the cake in the pan as it comes out of the oven, or do you turn the pan over to extract the cake and then add the glaze?

Planning to prepare this tonight for my mother's birthday....

I made this cake as a birthday gift to myself. I followed the instructions just as they are on the Food Network website and even read about 20 of the reviews before buying the ingredients (a little OCD, I know.

I had not seen Paula make this cake on television and had no idea how it was supposed to look. I was shocked when (with just 20 minutes left on the timer, I began to smell smoke. When I opened the oven, the cream cheese mixture had leaked out and was boiling at the bottom of the oven. The cake looked disasterious too!

I decided to continue to allow the cake to bake, and when I pulled it from the oven, it looked like an atomic bomb met up with some type of casserole dish. It was so ugly! I was dissapointed and just let it sit on top of the stove.

About an hour later, I decided to taste it before throwing it away and when I did...Mama Mia!! It was an explosion of moist, chocolateness (is that a word? and robust flavor dancing in my mouth!! Hmm Hmm Good!! I then realized, it probably looked like an explosion because it's supposed to...I mean it is called a Volcano Cake Right?

My only recommendations: Place foil at the bottom of the oven just in case yours leaks and don't try this cake unless you are either a true chocolate lover or in the mood for some chocolate because it is FULL of rich cholate flavor. I will make this one again!

I made this cake at thanksgiving. I thought it was going to be one of those difficult recipes, but it turned out to be quite easy. It was one of the best chocolate cakes I've ever had! Worth the time. Making another for X-mas!

So can you tell me if it is 8oz. of cream cheese or 1 oz of cream cheese, it couldn't be 1 oz with all that butter. Can somebody tell me if there is a typo? Thanks! What is 4 X or 10 X sugar?

WOW seems right to say on this one! The heaviest, richest, yummiest, super rich choc cake I ever made! I roasted my pecans before layering them on top of the coconut flakes....used 18 mini almond joy candy bars and placed them (without chopping directly on top of the coconut flakes & pecans (3 rows of 6 and then I put the cake mix on top and lightly tapped the pan before placing the dollops of cream cheese mixture on top which I did with a medium size cookie scoop. I put vanilla extract in the icing instead of almond extract. For the cake prep, I substituted milk for water in the recipe, canola oil for vegetable oil and added a tsp of vanilla extract to it. This cake turned out amazing! I even made it a second time for a non coconut fan in my family.....didn't use the coconut flakes and used different candy. Everyone loves it!
