Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/3 cups water
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 18 cups popped corn

Directions

In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, water, syrup, vinegar, and salt. Cook over high heat until mixture reaches 255 degrees F (hard-ball stage) on a candy thermometer. Stir in vanilla. Pour over popped corn, tossing gently to coat. When mixture is cool enough to handle, press popcorn into 3-inch balls with lightly greased hands. Cool completely on waxed paper.

    Add Butter

Rated: 2 stars out of 5
Very sticky so its risky eating them as you could lose dental crowns. Never thought Paula would ever need to be told to add... BUTTER but this recipe is more tasty and not as sticky when adding 1/4 cup butter at the beginning.Read more

Good Enough My Mom Cheated On Her Diet! (She never cheats)

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I was really nervous when I began making this recipe. For the main fact, I didn't have a candy thermometer. I used the old... glass of water and drop the mixture in technique instead. Was a success! I made a double batch too! Er.. may not do that again... as a houseful of dieters here. Wanted these for a Christmas party though. I would definitely say to .pour slowly over your popcorn as to not soak it. Make sure you butter your wax paper and hands and you are all set to go! Happy Baking!!Read more

    Popcorn balls

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
The only thing I would do different is spray the spoon that I stirred it with! I mixed them in a large microwave bowl so I... could reheat it to get off the remaining syrup off the bottom of the bowl. It covered three bags of microwave popcorn. I added red food coloring for Christmas, and they're going to be stocking stuffers! Thanks Paula it was quite a experience, you do have to work quickly. LOL! Linda Jones Carlsbad, NMRead more

Deprived of my 1965 childhood popcorn ball

Rated: 1 stars out of 5
I was surprised it turned into popcorn mush. Like most of you I checked the review to see if I was the only one that failed... so badly. I will not give up the battle for the perfect popcorn treat I knew as a child of the 60's. Stay tunned for the next attempt. Read more

Don't get discourgaged if you do not succeed the first time!!

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
Well my first attemp was a crash and burn!! I did not let the syrup get hot enough and it just melted all my popcorn! What a... waste! Being a little discourgaged, I was ready to go to Wal-Mart and buy the pre-made balls, but I said to myself "I refuse to fail!!" and tried again! May I suggest you test your syrup on a few kernals of popcorn instead of pouring it over all of your stash! I did not have a candy thermometer and used my meat themometer, which only goes up to 190' but I just kept on boiling the syrup mixture until I noticed on the back of a wooden spoon it started to look stringy when I pulled it from the pan.. I took a few kernals and syrup and they stared to stick together!! Eureka- I did it! It was a very proud moment- I gotta tell you! I poured the syrup mixture all over my popcorn and started forming balls! It was very easy once I figured out how the make the syrup and they taste good! They are very stick so watch those fillings!!Read more

    It was easy!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
For the first time I actually was successful at making popcorn balls. The reciepe was as easy as indicated. I used... microwave popcorn, which worked well. I will take the advice of a previous review and stir gently as I pour the candy so I get a more even coverage. Read more
