  • 2 cups sugar

  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 18 cups popped corn

Directions

In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, water, syrup, vinegar, and salt. Cook over high heat until mixture reaches 255 degrees F (hard-ball stage) on a candy thermometer. Stir in vanilla. Pour over popped corn, tossing gently to coat. When mixture is cool enough to handle, press popcorn into 3-inch balls with lightly greased hands. Cool completely on waxed paper.

Deprived of my 1965 childhood popcorn ball

Rated: 1 stars out of 5
I was surprised it turned into popcorn mush. Like most of you I checked the review to see if I was the only one that failed... so badly. I will not give up the battle for the perfect popcorn treat I knew as a child of the 60's. Stay tunned for the next attempt. Read more

Don't get discourgaged if you do not succeed the first time!!

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
Well my first attemp was a crash and burn!! I did not let the syrup get hot enough and it just melted all my popcorn! What a... waste! Being a little discourgaged, I was ready to go to Wal-Mart and buy the pre-made balls, but I said to myself "I refuse to fail!!" and tried again! May I suggest you test your syrup on a few kernals of popcorn instead of pouring it over all of your stash! I did not have a candy thermometer and used my meat themometer, which only goes up to 190' but I just kept on boiling the syrup mixture until I noticed on the back of a wooden spoon it started to look stringy when I pulled it from the pan.. I took a few kernals and syrup and they stared to stick together!! Eureka- I did it! It was a very proud moment- I gotta tell you! I poured the syrup mixture all over my popcorn and started forming balls! It was very easy once I figured out how the make the syrup and they taste good! They are very stick so watch those fillings!!Read more

    It was easy!

For the first time I actually was successful at making popcorn balls. The reciepe was as easy as indicated. I used... microwave popcorn, which worked well. I will take the advice of a previous review and stir gently as I pour the candy so I get a more even coverage. Read more

    Just like grandma's recipe

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
These popcorn balls taste great. The things i did differently include making the popcorn ahead of time and keeping it warm in... a roaster pan in the oven at 200 deg. I left it there for at least 45 minutes. I then let the sugar sauce cool for about 5 minutes before pouring it over the warm popcorn. With these changes, the popcorn did not collapse and everything worked great. The second batch I made much more quickly and I ended up with soupy deflated kernels. Overall, good recipe just don't pour it over the popcorn right off the stove.Read more

    Pour SLOWLY!!!

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
Not bad. When pouring the sugar mixture over the popcorn, make sure you stir the popcorn gently so that the sugar can cover... the popcorn evenly. I just dumped the sugar mixture on, most of it settled on the popcorn on the top and bottom of the bowl and wouldn't really mix with the rest. So, stir the popcorn as you are pouring. Other than that, they taste really good. Great for a treat for children (my dentist would hate me right now!!!).Read more
