I was intimidated from all the failed reviews before. It was EASY! I used 1/4 cup of butter, and replaced 1 cup of the white sugar with dark muscovado sugar for taste and a darker color. I also added a bit of orange food coloring as these were for Halloween "pumpkins". Some tips: Use an 8 quart mixing bowl that has been buttered for your popcorn (2 bags of Butter Flavor Act 1 Microwave popcorn. After getting the carmel to 255 degrees, let it cool just a minute, then pour over the popcorn. Lightly toss the corn with a large spoon to coat the popcorn, scraping the bottom of the bowl to get all of the carmel. By the time the popcorn is thoroughly coated, the carmel is cool enough to handle with your buttered hands. I put each ball in a cello bag, tied with a green pipe cleaner, and used a felt tip to draw the faces. 2 Batches yielded 75 2 to 2.25 inch balls.

I love Paula, but I followed this recipe to the tee and ended up with soggy, sweet popcorn that would not form into balls. Is something possibly missing from this recipe?

Was a little nervous to try these... the whole hard candy/soft candy/brittle stage can be a little scarey, but with a handy dandy candy themometer, a little patience, and tadah.... yummy popcorn balls! I made mine a smaller size (1 1/2 inch I wrapped them in saranwrap, tied them with a bow and cute snacks to pass out for my daughter's school birthday snack!

First time trying the recipe...was a huge success. I skipped rolling them into ball shape and just make a flat to break off into squares. Easier to eat and less mess. I halfed the very first run and it even turned out great. It was a very humid day, so I was worried about the sugar setting up right, but it was so easy. I may have been in the kitchen 15-20 minutes. Thanks, Paula.

My 9 1/2 year old made this recipe. It was awesome! The only thing we did different was cook the popcorn in Orville Redenbacher's Butter Flavored Popcorn Oil.

I really had fun making these, forgot the vanilla, and they still turned out right.

I am not sure what happened but mine did not turn out. I thought because Paula Dean's name was on this it would be good, but not for me. I did not add the butter like the others suggested so maybe that was the problem.
I live in high altitude, and when I poured over my popcorn, my popcorn just melted into nothingness. It would not form at all into a ball, it just fell apart.
I tasted the hot mess and it tasted very yummy but for some reason it didn't turn out for me. I followed the recipe, so not sure what the concern was. Very sad, I have to come up with something else for my preschooler's Christmas party tomorrow. :( YES THEY CALL IT CHRISTMAS as it should be!

After making these popcorn balls, the only thing I'm impressed with is the mess! The taste is just gooey sugar.I followed the advice to add butter and to pour everything onto a cookie sheet lined with wax paper and sprayed with Pam, but I would skip the wax paper and just spray directly on the cookie sheet because the paper just ripped and made it harder to work with. I also cooked it to a soft ball instead of a hard ball because I didn't want the balls to be too crunchy - I'm taking them to a cheer bake sale at the high school football game tonight, and I didn't think people would want sticky crumbs falling in their laps. It was the right choice - they're perfect in that regard, just rather tastless.

We just finished making this recipe. The only thing I did different was to add the 1/4 cup butter like suggested. First time I ever made this and it turned out just like I remember my dad (my he rest in peace making it when I was little. Now I got to make the same memories with my kids. Thank you Paula Deen for the recipe! I knew as soon as I seen your name I could trust this would be a hit. We will be making this often!
