I also saw Paula make this dish on her show and thought I'd give it a try. It was very good and the texture was much like the bread pudding my mother used to make. The cake is the best red velvet I've ever made but I will air dry half the cake for 1-2 days before I toast it in the oven. The other half I will serve with cream cheese icing or freeze for another day. I think half of the cake with the recipe for all the pudding will work great. I would bake it in either ramekins or a 9" square pan. I spooned the bread pudding into individual serving dishes and topped with whipped cream. My guests thought it yummy.

We've always loved red cake with cook butter frosting, but it can be a little much. I found your recipe and makde a couple of modifications. I substituted fat free half & half for the regular half & half. I also used reduced fat cream cheese. I agree with the other comments that the recipe didn't make enough sauce, so I made an extra 1/2 batch to pour over the cake cubes. It turned out fantastic and was not as loaded with fat. The cake was moist and the sauce was very good, similar to a custard. Our family loved it.

For the past several years, I've been making my mom a red velvet cake with swiss buttercream for her December 3rd birthday. This year, i wasn't able to, but decided that for Christmas brunch, she would finally get it. Instead, I saw Paula make this on one of her episodes. When I read some of the early comments, I was slightly apprehensive, but tried the recipe anyway.

First, I actually cheated with the cake- I bought a box mix if red velvet (yes, they do make one! duncan hines i believe with the was my schedule was and trust me- a baking enthusiast (I was a pastry chef for several years, I didn't have the time to make it from scratch. I also left the cake out for about two days before i was going to bake it. I figured by the other comments, the cake drying in the ovn for 10mins at 350 may not dry it out enough to make it less mushy. I figured the cake would turn to mush when the custard was added. I also dried the cakes cubes for the allotted time in the recipe. I also think there may have been TOO much cake cubes for the amount of custard.,. It didn't really cover it enough. I also made a creme anglaise (a vanilla cream sauce and added a little cinnamon to it. My mom and gramma loved it! It is very rich, but well worth it! I believe it's the new holiday favorite!

Hi, Paula, my dad saw you make this and his favorite dessert is bread pudding. I've wanted to make it for him and I told him I would give this a try. I love bread pudding, too, especially if there is whiskey or rum sauce involved. The cake went just fine but then when the pudding portion came along it was a little more challenging. I expected a little more liquid to pour over the cake but I moved forward! Your recipe suggested serving with vanilla ice cream which my boys (ages 15 and 11 did. They had never had bread pudding before and can be picky about their desserts. They loved it! My mother and I decided to find a sauce to put over it instead of ice cream. We looked through the selection of liqueurs in their cabinet and got online plus mom got out her 'food bible' from the 1950's or 60's. We found your Cream Sauce recipe that has irish cream as one of the ingredients. We used half-n-half since we didn't have heavy cream on hand and it turned out perfect. We served that over the pudding and had my dad taste it first. He said it was a masterpiece. My husband can be picky about desserts, too, and he loved it. I would suggest for everyone that didn't particularly enjoy this recipe to try it again and either use this Cream Sauce recipe or another sauce. Thanks again for another adventure in cooking, Paula!

The cake recipe itself is really good. I used white wine vinegar instead and it made the cake a bit tangier.

As for the pudding, it was good. I baked it both in the ramekins and in a small baking dish. The ramekins came out better, the baking dish was a bit mushy.

The dish is better with the ice cream. If you choose to eat it without the ice cream the pudding has a weird consistency.

It was a hit for Christmas. Who doesn't like red velvet cake?

I saw Paula make this and thought it looked wonderful. My version didn't turn out as nice looking, but everyone enjoyed the dessert. My mistake was that I expected the cake "cubes" to dry out a little more during the time in the oven. When they didn't I left them in for longer and longer intervals. Ultimately burning quite a few of them. This recipe also made enough for me to use 1/3 of the cake simply as the cake and the rest as the bread pudding. I will definately make the cake and pudding again.

I'm right there with Jay's comment...this looked soo good on TV, so I rushed out to buy all the ingrediants. I made it for my bunko group, and prefaced it by saying..."I know that it doesn't look very good...but we'll just try it". I didn't have time for a trial run, and just went with it. The best comment - from 12 women - was "It's not thaaat bad". I also got ice cream to go with it, as the recipe says, and I think it was the ice cream that even made it palatable. I was so disappointed. I'll continue to cook with Paula, but not this one again!

First off, I love Paula Dean and have enjoyed every one of her recipes that I have ever attempted to make! With that said, I was very disappointed in this recipe. I watched her make it on her show and couldn't wait to try it. What?s not to love!? I love the red velvet cake (I have made her recipe before and I love bread pudding! I just new I would love this! I made it last night for my test run (I never try anything new for company without a test run and it was not anything like I expected. It?s just, - well -, different. The taste is ok, but if you?re expecting a bread pudding you will be disappointed. The texture is just all wrong for what you expect when you hear ?bread pudding?. I would much rather have made red velvet cake with cream cheese icing as to have made this. Sorry Paula, there is a first time for everything. I still love ya!

I was very disappointed in this recipe. I watched her make it on her show last night and couldn't wait to try it. I made it for a family dinner and not even one person liked it.
