I was trying to figure out was a senate bean was for the whole show. I have been eating beans southern style and spanish style all my life and never heard of a senate bean! Why didn't she cook the beans and everything with the beans for the first 3 hours? That's how we do it.

You've done it again Paula! This is absolutely delish. I used canned navy beans instead of dry and also a little chicken broth and water. Very good! And Yes, it does sit heavy.

i have used both country ham (which Paula says is too salty but I only cooked with it for 2 hours, and regualr ham. The soup is delish, especially with corn bread. Careful...it does sit heavy!

This was my first real attempt at making any type of soup other than chili and it was so good. I didn't have dried beans on hand so I used 4 cans of great northern beans and pureed two of them. I used half water and half chicken stock (about 3 cups of each although 2 of each would make a little thicker soup. Also added carrrots and celery for some added veggies and let it simmer for about 30-45 minutes. Came out perfect!

A little bland, needed more of something...not sure what. I did add chopped carrots, celery and onion, but it was still on the bland side. Some type of spice maybe.
