The pea soup was excellent and would make it again for sure. The 1 cup of salt goes with the pepper, garlic powder and onion powder which is the house seasoning. You are suppose to make it up, use a pinch or two and save the rest for other recipe's. Always read a recipe all the way through before making it.

This soup was wayyyy too salty! I should've listened to my guts and held back on the seasoning more. I didn't add the full cup of salt the recipe asked for and it was still inedible :(

OK so I am going to say it for all to hear...I am a "first time" cook. Can you guess what I did? Blindly trusting the recipe word for word, yes, I added a whole cup of salt to my soup. Not to mention a quater cup of everything else from the house seasoning. I questioned it, but thought...who am I to question? I was so excited about the recipe because my husband is so picky and while I was cooking the soup he kept commenting on how good it smelled! My tongue about shrivled when I tasted it! Well, I live and learn. At least this has not scared me away from cooking for good. (hopefully that's a good thing. I am sure the soup can't be saved. Although I did hear soaking potatoes in it would help. Any suggestions besides backing away from the kitchen?

Fantastic soup! I did drain brown the sausage and drain the fat before adding it to the soup. The bacon fat was more than enough to soften the veggies and add a lot of flavor. The soup had great consistency-- to me that's the most important factor in split pea soup! Hearty, stick-to-your-ribs food. Perfect for winter days!

Everytime I make this recipe, I say to myself, "Any recipe that starts with frying bacon in butter can't be all bad!". This is the best split pea soup recipe I've ever had. I'd swear that it had a finite amount of house seasoning in the recipe itself when I first printed it out to make- they really should correct that for first time cooks that may cook literally by the book! I'd hate to see someone throw all that house seasoning in an ruin a great soup by over-seasoning!

I love love LOVE this soup, It's so flavorful! even my finicky sons love it, although I do cheat a little on this recipe so the boys will eat it, I food process the onion and celery very fine, and they have no clue its in there... also I add spicy sausage instead of regular, and I double the recipe cause this soup is so yummy if I only make a small batch its gone quickly, I also use along with the bacon, cubed ham, since thanksgiving was just here perfect thing to use the rest in, I'm making it today again cause its perfect for the weather outside first day of snow here in OHIO... I highly recommend this soup and of course add salt slowly add more onion and garlic powder and pepper as needed!!!!

I am making this tonight, I don't like split pea soup I was always told to eat it as a kid when my mom made it, sorry mom it was terrible. But I'm gonna give this recipe a try. I'm pretty sure it'll be YUMMY GOOD cuz I've never came across a Paula Deen recipe that wasn't good.
And OMG to the people who use all the house seasoning, man if that's what you think to do I don't think you should be using the HOT stove or the Sharp knives or for that matter DRIVING... There are to many dense people behind the wheel as it is...
