This Northern Girl has been Enjoying this Forever!!

My family is originally from New York (have NEVER lived in the South), and yet my dad made this all the time when I was... growing up. We moved to So-Cal when I was a young girl and still enjoyed cucumber and onions with our cukes grown fresh from our garden! My husband and I still live here in Southern Cal and found a local deli (Brents!) who makes this also, so we enjoy it all the time with take-out. When I make it at home, I pass on the peppers (my hubby doesn't care for them) and use rice wine vinegar instead of the white vinegar and sugar; adds a lovely sweet-tart flavor and makes for a delicious side dish. Don't know why it's considered southern, though, as I've been having it all my life and no one in my family has ever lived in the South. Love it, though!Read more

Skip the mayo if you want it to be more healthy. Sour cream works also!

My family made a marinate of white vinegar, sugar, and water. Drained and added some mayo. I now marinate for a few hours... and make a olive oil based dressing. Yum Read more
