Suggestion for the bacon not cooking on the top: slice it into strips and precook it, that way you can drain off some of the grease if you want. I sometimes substitute cooked sausage for the bacon. I've made this recipe for years and it's the one I always go to, whether cooked in the oven or in the crockpot.

I have used this recipe solely for several years after seeing it on Paula Deen's show and am always asked to bring it whenever we have a family get-together. Just a tip to a couple of the reviewers that mentioned that their bacon on top of the beans didn't cook throughout.....I had this problem also but tried using the ready cooked bacon and problem solved....the package has 15 slices in it and that's just enough to fit on top of beans using a 13 x 9" pan.....try it and you'll love it!

I added 2 Tablespoons of Jack Daniels to this recipe. The flavor become so deep and bold.

Very very good. I have a similar recipe that I really love but it didn't have that squeeze of lemon. That added a brightness that my recipe didn't have. Thank you, Paula...

Incredibly easy to make and definitely a crowd favorite! I multiplied the recipe by 5, made the dish the day before serving so that the flavors would have plenty of time to meld and warmed up and served them in a crockpot at the event. The mustard cuts the sweetness, yet does not in any way have a dominate flavor in the dish. My husband refuses to eat anything with mustard in it and yet not knowing there was mustard in this recipe, he ate multiple helpings over the last 2 days. I would definitely makes this again.

I am not a baked bean fan....so many times too sweet for me. However, I needed a dish for a church Bar-B-Que last summer and decided to check the Food Network site for a recipe. I really love Paula Deen's cooking and this recipe looked a bit different from the usual baked bean recipes. So I selected it and cooked it. Everyone at the Bar-B-Que LOVED the beans and asked me for the recipe!! I made copies ( of course, attributing Paula Deen! and passed them out later. I doubled this recipe and baked it in a 13x9" pan. The only minor problem I had was the bacon, layered on top, did not cook through enough. So, I did take it off before taking the dish to church. However, there was a lot of bacon flavor in the beans anyway. I think this year, for the church Bar-B-Que, I will try reviewer rnkrawiec's idea and sautee the bacom and add it with the onions. This was YUMMY! You have done it again Paula!

Delicious... I used thick cut bacon, which didn't quite cook through as well as I would have liked, so next time I will use a normal cut.

Absolutely the best baked beans recipe I have EVER had, and I am not a huge baked bean person. I am now! I sauteed the bacon then added the onions. Adds so much depth. You will not be sorry.

These are the best baked beans I have ever tasted. I make mine just as she says, except I don't ever use the bacon. I have made these tons of times. The first few times I made these I put them in the oven as she directs, however, now I just put 'em in a pot on the stove and simmer them for a little while. Probably 30 minutes or so. They are still just as delicious!! I love these things.
