I remember helping my Grandmother make tea-cakes when I was real young. What was wrote down in her recipe book, which she never wrote out the full details to any of her recipes. The ingredients are
1 cup crisco
3 cups sugar
1/4 cup buttermilk
1tea spoon soda
1tea spoon vanilla
5 cups all pourpose flour
4 eggs
Cream lard and sugar
Add eggs
Sift and add flour
Dissolve soda in milk then add then add vanilla
That was all I had to go on, I never remembered rolling them out. But that was 40 years ago too. I tried to make these the other night just dropping a spoonfull on a sheet pan. They came out close but raw almost in the middle, when edges were brown.
After reading your recipe it all came back to me. Thanks much Paula Deen, your a great inspiration. And hopefully will have alot more of these old southern favorites to share.
Oh the last part of the recipe was bake at 350 for 9-12 min.
Next I have to try and figure out her carmel icing recipe.

Very Good! Extremely close to the ones I use to eat as a little girl. Good job Paula. My hubby suggested i use a touch of nutmeg though.

This recipe was good but to add a special "Arkansas Southern" flavor try adding a pinch of nutmeg'' A trick from my Great-Great Grandmother.

Followed recipe to the tee...However very disappointed...they baked up very flat...Would not bake this recipe again...I really have always had good luck with Paula Deen's recipes and not sure what happened....It was new baking soda and new baking powder.

This is the recipe I have been looking for all my life! My great grandmother used to make these and never could(or maybe would give out the recipe right. Every since she died no one has had them quite like she used to make. I haven't eaten a decent tea cake since she was around. But I saw this recipe that sounded right on. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
I even had my grandpa try them for me to see if they are like what he remembered. The only thing was that she made her's thinner and baked them until they were a light golden brown. I am so excited that my search for the perfect tea cake recipe is over.

Yes, I crave true Southern tea cakes. My aunt made them for me when I was young, and I never got her recipe. The closest I have ever come is a bakery and cafe in Franklin, TN. My son and his family lived there for 8 years, and I always had to go to that wonderful bakery and cafe, just off the downtown area, and fill up a bag to bring back to Texas with me. Truth be told, very few made it to the Texas border.
Now, Paula has given me the recipe that is the closest to my aunt's and brings back wonderful memories. Not too sweet, thick and yummy. Maybe this is a Southern thing, don't know, but it shouldn't be. Everyone should try them and start making memories of your own.
Thank you, Paula, and please keep the great Southern traditions of good food, family and fun so we can all keep enjoying our own comfort foods. Love ya!
