This is my go to appetizer. I keep a jar on hand all the time. I can make it at home or if my husband commits me to something last minute, I grab the jar and a bowl and stop at the store to get the sour cream and mayo. I do put a little less cumin but the real key is to let the made dip sit in the fridge and let the flavors come together if you have time. But if you are a girl on the go like me - it is still good. I think it tastes best with Wavy Lays Chips.

I also was fortunate enough to have seen the episode where the spices are mixed up ahead of time, so I knew what to do when it came time to make the recipe.
First time I made this, the chili powder was way too overpowering. I backed off the chili powder by about 25%. Also added a couple tablespoons of garlic powder, because you can't have a good dip recipe without onion and garlic together! Just my honest opinion.
Finally, I added a pinch of cayenne pepper and a few drops of Chipotle Tabasco and I think I finally nailed it! The family loves this with Fritos and Tostito chips. It's also great as a spread on grilled chicken sandwiches. Will try it on burgers soon.
Code blue - LOL!!

This dip was wonderful except it tasted like it had too much of a mayo taste so I put in a cup and a half of sour cream and half a cup of mayo and voila...Perfect!

I agree with everyone else who has commented thus far. READ the directions. I happened to be watching Paula's show featuring this particular recipe and knew right away that the first 6 ingredients were the Dip Mix.
It looks very tasty and cannot wait to try it!

Ok...I just want to say anyone with the least bit of common sense should of been able to read the recipe and know that the mix was the first ingredients listed!! If you had read the recipe it says to add 3 tbsp of the mix not all of the above ingredients!! LOL... People you crack me up!!!

To Kelli in Fresno, i think that the southwestern dip ingred. are the first 6 ingred. listed in the recipe. Then, you combine 3 tablespoons of that spice blend to the sour cream and mayonaise to complete the dip.

Fortunately, I saw this recipe made by Paula on her show before I looked it up, so I knew the specifics of how to make the mix vs. the dip. The written version really does need to be revised to make instructions more clear. When made as intended, it is great!
