This is a great recipe, we loved it. I added an extra jalepno and it gave a very nice spicy kick.

Our black eyed peas were a little extra black yesterday (extra good fortune, right?. I burned this recipe, but I think the problem was my pan. I used an EXTRA large saucepan. When I checked them at 45 minutes, the bottom layer was burned. I just mixed them around and everyone choked them down anyway! The unburned beans were delicious! I soaked for just a few hours in the morning because I couldn't beleive that they didn't need ANY soaking and that seemed to work okay. Great for Black Eyed Peas! I like the extra kick!

I served this to my eighth grade students for an authentic taste of the south in celebration of southern literature. My students "inhaled" this dish. Thank you, Paula!

P.S. I just bought your new cook book!

I tried this recipe and it was very good. I followed most of the recipe. I used cayenne pepper instead but it was very good. I will do it from now on.

Easy, delicious and nutritious! I have made this several times. The last time, I substituted packaged bacon pieces for the bacon slices and sauted the onion in olive oil. This made it even more nutitious and it was still delicious.

Beans were a bit overcooked but I soaked them overnight. I won't cook them as long next time.

I don't know what happened with this one. I'm wondering if it's the altitude, but I cooked these peas almost 2 hours and they still were hard. Also, I had to continuously add water which ended up making them tasteless as well. I didn't catch this recipe on t.v. Was I supposed to soak the peas overnight or possibly use only 1/2 of the 16 oz. bag?
