4 to 6 servings

  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 12 slices white bread
  • 1 cup sliced fresh strawberries
  • Butter, for cooking
  • Maple syrup, for serving
  • Strawberry Syrup, for serving, recipe follows
  • Confectioners' sugar, for serving
  • Strawberry Syrup:
  • 3 cups sliced strawberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • Zest and juice of 1 lemon

In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and granulated sugar. Spread the cream cheese on half of the bread slices and top with strawberries. Top with the remaining 6 bread slices and press around the edges to seal.

Melt butter on a griddle over medium-low heat. Dip the sandwiches in the egg mixture for a few seconds on each side. Cook the sandwiches until golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Serve with maple syrup, Strawberry Syrup, or confectioners' sugar.

Strawberry Syrup:

In a medium saucepan, combine all the ingredients and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer until the strawberries are soft and the syrup is thickened and reduced by 1/3 to 1/2 in volume, 15 to 18 minutes.

Remove from the heat and let cool to room temperature before serving.

Cook's Note: If a thinner syrup is desired, strain the hot syrup through a fine mesh strainer into a clean container and let cool.

    this dish was the best
This was very DELISH!!! It was quick and simple to make and my family and I enjoyed it!
Delicious! However, I did make a few changes I added raspberries to the strawberry sauce. I decided not to add sugar to the egg mixture because I thought it would make it too sweet instead I added some cinnamon.
I made this for my wife on Mother's Day (today. However, I drizzled some chocolate syrup in with the cream cheese and strawberries. I also added a little cinnamon in the egg mixture. Then, I topped it with strawberries, powdered sugar and a tad more chocolate syrup. DELICIOUS! She is a happy mom!!
We had extra strawberry cream cheese and I didn't want it to go to waste so I made this and LOVED it. I sprinkled powdered sugar on top when it was done & it was perfect. I didn't put strawberries inside but it tasted fantastic. The cream cheese was warm and so delicious. I will definitely be making this again!
Made this today as a test run for guests at our B&B. I made homemade bread last night and it turned out great. I put a thin smear of cream cheese on both sides (you could see the bread through it in just a few places so it wasn't too thick, piled the fresh strawberries inside and mashed them together. Putting the cream cheese on both sides ensures that the edges will seal well and keeps the strawberry juices in a little pocket. I do think it would have been a little bland if it weren't for the strawberry sauce (which was excellent!!! not too sweet All in all, the guests loved it and this will now be a regular item on our breakfast menu.
Our family thought their was too much cream cheese. I also used store bought white bread which much have been much more absorbent than Paula's because I had to use double the amount of egg mixture. Medium low heat was not the same on my glass top stove. Needed to bump the temp up to medium. We did not make the strawberry syrup, but I bet that would have made it taste much was not sweet enough for us.
I had a similar experience. Too much cream cheese, not enough egg. The recipe turned out kind of sour, like the strawberries and the cream cheese did not blend together enough.
Loved the recipe. So quick, easy and delicious.
I made this recipe for my grandkids when we went camping. They said it was the best French toast they ever had! Cant wait to make it again!
Made this after seeing it on tv. Substituted apples for strawberries used honey crisp apples with some cinnomin and it turned out awsome. Cooking is so much fun
I loved this recipe. My husband ate leftovers from a pancake breakfast but this was so easy, I made it for myself. I think he was jealous. It took no time at all. By the time my sausage was cooked my french toast was done, with the tasty strawberry syrup to go with it. I used frozen whole strawberries that were easy to slice. I thought it would be too rich, but it wasn't. I will make this for my grandkids when we go camping.
I just watched the show, and got up and made it! I used Health Nut Bread and it was delicious!!!
Mabey I cooked it wrong but it tasted awful, I couldn't even finish it.
I've never liked French toast but this recipe changed my mind. I would definitely make this again because it was a hit for a lovely Saturday morning breakfast. I changed the recipe by putting a thin layer of cream cheese on each slice of bread. I don't think the recipe was in any way diminished by my change!
Very good but the cream cheese is a bit tangy for the rest of the dish. I would add a smidgen of sugar or vanilla to the cream cheese - not a lot - just enough to offset the tanginess of the cream cheese. Do not use too much cream cheese. Also, helpful to use a bread with soft crust for when you pinch the 2 pieces of bread together. Also used blueberries - the flavor was more pronounce that the strawberries - which tended to get lost
very yummy and rich. i added a few tablespoons of sugar to the cream cheese and strawberries then just powdered sugar on top. thanks paula!
What a great idea to make french toast a special meal for yourself or company. I love the strawberries and cream cheese inside which made it extra good.
WOWWEEE! This recipe is awesome my husband loved it and so did I . How ever the recipe is exact so If your feeding a big family double everything you should have enough cream cheese one 8oz block if you double the egg mixture and bread, and strawberries enjoy.. "oh I just used our favorite maple syrup".
    Delicious Everyone loved it
Awesome recipe! I made it for sunday brunch and everyone loved it. I changed it up alittle bit by substituting cinnamon raisin bread instead of the white bread. Delicious!
SCORE!!! Kids loved it!! Great way to get a picky eater to eat her fruit!!! Thanks Paula and boys!
This recipe is wonderful. I have a very picky son, but he thought this was "quite tasty" and loved it. I did change the bread to sourdough french bread. I'm glad I made this change, it gave the french toast a very good flavor. I also was running out of time to make the sauce, so I took about a cup of strawberries and put them in a microwave bowl with pure maple syrup and heated it for a minute. It was delish! Make this recipe you will not be sorry! I so love Paula!
This recipe was great! Though I had to put a spin on it. I realized at the last minute that I didn't have any eggs to make french toast so I ended up making pancakes. I sliced up strawberries and pressed them into the pancake batter, then spread cream cheese in between. Fantastic! Another great recipe from Paula!
