Ingredients

  • 1 large angel food cake

For the custard:

  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 (12-ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed

For the glaze:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons strawberry gelatin (recommended: Jell-O)
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, cut in 1/2 (if berries are extra large, they can be cut into quarters)
  • Whole fresh strawberries and mint leaves, for garnish

Directions

Slice cake, using a serrated knife, horizontally into 3 equal layers.

For the custard:

Mix together cream cheese, condensed milk, and whipped topping in a bowl; set aside.

For the glaze:

In a medium saucepan, stir together sugar, cornstarch, and gelatin; add water. Cook stirring over medium heat until thick. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely. Fold in strawberries.

For assembly:

Place 1 layer of cake in a large clear bowl. Top with a layer of glaze, followed by a layer of custard mixture. Repeat layering in this order for remaining cake, glaze and custard. Top cake with 3 whole fresh strawberries and fresh mint leaves.

    Sweet Treat Perfect for Summer

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
This shortcake is very rich, really sweet, and best served ice cold. My only concern with the dish was that it is a few... pinches too sweet. I wanted to give it a 4 and a 1/2, but I like Paula and the sugar part is the only thing that could be altered.Read more

We love it! I had pound cake to add, instead of angel food and it was still fantastic!!! This is becoming a keeper in my... recipe box.....so darn good! The custard itself is delightful. MMMMMmmmmmmm!Read more

    Try This Variation

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
Since my husband is not crazy about strawberries but loves Black Forest Cake, I experimented with Paula's basic recipe. I... made a box angel food cake and added unsweetened baking cocoa. I used frozen dark sweet cherries (thawed & drained) I used unsweetened cherry gelatin, using the juice from the cherries as part of the liquid. I should have read the reviews, though, and doubled the glaze. It was a little on the dry side. Read more

This Shortcake is soooo good!!! It is the best take on a shortcake I've ever had. Anyone who says it isn't great just didn't... make it right! We're going to have it this Sunday for Father's Day!Read more

    GLAZE TASTES LIKE COUGH SYRUP

Rated: 2 stars out of 5
The glaze recipe is too syrupy sweet. ( and you definately have to double it in order to make the recipe as the reviews... state). I even used 1/2 sugar free gelatin in order to cut down on the sweetness - which is also in the reviews). It would be good with a different glaze recipe. I think I would use pound cake, if I ever make it again. I feel like the glaze recipe is a mistake and I wish Paula's people would correct it, because it could be a much more successful dish!
