I was a guest and served one of these. They look weird and they taste awful--too sweet, and just a big sticky mess. I couldn't push it into a small enough pile on my plate. I suppose if you really enjoy traditional candied yams, you will enjoy this version. But for me, oh wow, No, Thank You!

I ENJOYED THE SWEET POTATO BALLS BUT I HAVE A FEW IMPORTANT SUGGESTIONS. THEY ARE DEFINITELY TOO SWEET EVEN IF YOU CUT THE BROWN SUGAR IN HALF. SO, I WOULD DO LESS THAN 1/3 OF A CUP. I WANTED TO DO A TEST RUN, SO I MADE A COUPLE AND BAKED THEM FOR 16 MINUTES AND THEY SPLIT OPEN. WHEN I MAKE THE REST I WILL COOK FOR 13-15 MINUTES. MY SISTER THOUGHT THEY WERE SWEET BUT MY MOTHER SAVAGED THEM UP AND DIDN'T ANSWER ANY OF MY QUESTIONS WHILE ENHALING HER BALL. SHE OBVIOUSLY THOUGHT THEY WERE GREAT!! I THOUGHT THEY WERE GOOD AND SO DID EVERYONE ELSE! ENJOY AND LISTEN TO MY TIPS!

I did a test run with these, and donated them after tasting. I added some heat; (watching too much Bobby Flay! about a 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper and 1/2 tsp. chili powder. Chilling the mixture first makes them much easier to work with and form. I did smaller balls with mini marshmallows inside. I added finely crushed pecans to the coconut. They are very good, and I am making more today for Thanksgiving. It is a nice change for using sweet potatoes.

I am planning on using this recipe for Thanksgiving. I am going to try it with the coconut, sugar, and cinnamon mixture for some of the balls and then just the sugar and cinnamon mixture on the rest. I have family members that do not like coconut. I am looking forward to tasting this sweet potato recipe. Happy Thanksgiving.

Despite all the negative reviews, my love of Paula Deen persuaded me to make these sweet potato balls anyway. I made a test batch to see if I wanted to take them to Thanksgiving... I don't. I LOVE sweet potato pie and coconut, and I really thought these would be great. To me, they don't have much taste. Ones made with an entire marshmallow exploded and wouldn't stay together. Ones with half a marshmallow did a lot better. I think they'd taste better rolled in pecans rather than coconut. Sadly, I threw my test batch in the trash.

Every sweet potato recipe under the sun includes marshmallows and putting them in the middle versus on the top of a casserole makes little to no difference in taste. We're not big coconut fans so we too swapped out the coconut for oats, cinnamon, and a little brown sugar. I also cut down the brown sugar and omitted the orange zest. The sweet potatoes had the right amount of orange flavor (although I didn't measure the juice - just eyeballed it that way but they were still a bit sweet so I can't imagine using the full 2/3 of a cup. They also broke open when I tried to remove them from the pan with a spatula. In the end, they wound up looking like a dollop of sweet potato casserole when they hit the plate, and the flavor was much the same. The sweet potato and peach bake that I make most Thanksgivings is a MUCH bigger hit and far yummier. While this recipe isn't bad (with modification, it certainly isn't spectacular. Sorry.

I read the previous comments to make this recipe a little better, but they still turned out just "ok." I chilled the mashed sweet potatoes in the fridge and this made the balls easy to form. I also added chopped pecans to the coconut mixture for a little crunch. I used half the granulated sugar and half the brown sugar (as previous reviews suggested, and I honestly did not think they were sweet enough! (but that's just me, the rest of the diners said they were just right. I used baby marshmallows and they disappeared! I could not taste them at all and that is what enticed me about this recipe. Everyone at dinner loved them though and there were no leftovers! Adjust the sugar to your desired sweetness. I guess I like my sweet potatoes pretty sweet!

I love Paula and try a lot of her recipes but when watching her show I knew I wanted to try these but thought those are huge who would eat so much Sweet Potatoes on Thanksgiving ( made these last year so what I did was followed the recipe cut back a little on the sugar and made the balls a lot smaller and stuffed with a miniature marshmellow we are not big coconut fan's so I rolled in ginger snaps. They were a huge hit!

Sorry Paula. These were just nasty! I followed the recipe. The orange was just way too much. I do not understand why everyone is CHANGING the recipe and then giving it 4 and 5 stars!! You are basically rating your own personal recipe!
