Made this for Thanksgiving last year by the book - was a big hit!

I liked it a lot. My husband thought there was too much butter and cheese. The only addition I made was to add some sauteed kale to the layers. I will make this again but cut back on the butter and probably only use one cup of cheese.

Great recipe. I would also cut my potato thinner. I also found there was not enough sauce so would make a larger batch next time. However, the caramelized onions and the cayenne really put a great twist to this dish. I am not fond of sweet recipes with marshmallows. Savory is so much better and complimented my brined turkey so well!! This is definitely a keeper. Thank you Paula Dean.

I made this for Thanksgiving this year and it was the highlight. No need to change a thing though I might add a touch more cayenne. Make sure you slice the potatoes to 1/8. I used yams with great results. It's a rich dish and blends well with Thanksgiving flavors.

I, too, watched this episode this past Saturday morning and wanted to try this dish. I made it last night as a side dish and this southern girl is here to tell you that it was over the top! Absolutely delicious! I especially loved how the onions and spices put a new twist on the flavor of the sweet potatoes! Thanks Paula and Jamie...this one is a home run!

I used yams because I could not find actual sweet potatoes. I did not know if they'd be interchangeable in a recipe, but they were fine and the dish tasted very good. However, the potatoes (yams were not fork-tender after 35 minutes of covered cooking despite the fact that I did slice them quite thin. So I gave them another 10 minutes before uncovering them and then cooked them for the final 15 minutes and they were perfect. So you should definitely factor in about 10-15 min. more initial cooking time than the recipe states. I omitted the cayenne mixed in with the caramelized onions because I didn't have it on hand, but I did not think the recipe suffered because of it. Plenty of flavor without it.

I don't like sweet potatoes. But I made this because my husband wanted it for Father's Day. We saw it on Paula Deen yesterday. So I cut the recipe in half to serve 5 instead of 10 because it is just me, my husband, my daughter, and toddler son. My husband really liked it and I thought it was good enough to eat. There are enough leftovers to for his lunch, too. I followed the recipe exactly, but the potatoes were not fork tender after 30 minutes. I covered them back up for another 15 and they were good. Not as much of a pain to make as I thought it would be, lol. And if all the in-laws didn't think their yams were the best, I'd probably bring these. I might anyway. (Especially since I keep kosher and everybody puts marshmallows in their yams. Thanks Ms. Paula!
