I made this for the kids because I had a loaf of dried sweet french bread that no one liked when it was soft and I hate throwing things away. The recipe is easy and quick. I have tried other recipes for custard type desserts with less than satisfactory results. I did stress over the cooking in a pan with no water pan but it was great when I pulled it out at 35 minutes. I sprayed my metal pan with butter flavored spray instead of greased it and I did sprinkle the top with cinnamon and raisins which really added to the taste. I may back off on the sugar next time. I'm going to try one cup of the granualted sugar but keep the cup of light brown sugar for the topping. I may also try this with a dozen cake donuts that no one is eating and have left on the counter. According to my teenage daughters the only mistake I made was not making two batches! Yeah Paula you are the best for comfort foods.

Easy to make, truely the best bread pudding I have ever tasted. I did add cinnamon, next time going to add some apple. Although perfect the way it was. Two other people tried it and told me the same thing, that it was the best bread pudding they have ever eaten.

I wanted to make a bread pudding, not singlehandedly keep the sugar cane fields of Hawaii in business. I have never seen a bread pudding recipe that called for even one cup of sugar in the pudding. This recipe has 2 cups granulated and 1 cup of brown sugar in the pudding -and another cup granulated in the sauce. That is 1 1/3 cups sugar for every cup of bread in this recipe! Ridiculous.

I made the pudding with 1/2 cup granulated sugar instead of 2 cups. Which is the usual amount in nearly all other bread pudding recipes and most of those still don't have a cup of brown sugar on top of that -and followed the rest of the recipe as written. It was delicious and perfectly sweet. Adding another 1 1/2 cups sugar to the pudding cannot possibly improve this recipe -since ratcheting up the sweetness to a sickening degree is no improvement. This sauce is an excellent one. Two stars for a recipe needlessly overloading it with sugar. It gets 5 stars with the proper amount.

If you don't want sweet why are you making bread pudding? I have made this twice for large groups of people and I am still getting requests for the recipe. The last time I made a double recipe and every drop was eaten. Don't change a thing.

I thought that this recipe was easy and delicious. I did not find it too sweet at all. I made it tonight for dessert, and even my sister who hates bread pudding loved it. I also thought that the topping made it. I was debating whether to make the topping because of the egg but I made it anyway since it was going to be cooked. Im glad that I did end up making it. Amazing recipe! Thank you Paula!

I'm thinking 1/2 C sugar instead of 2 C sugar would have made this dish much better. As is, it is way too sweat, even for me.

I've never made bread pudding before, have only had it once in my 43 years, but decided to make for Christmas dessert for my sister in law and her family, since they love it....well, I was the hit!! Then the neighbors came and said it was better than she's ever had, and I gave her my recipe card that I had printed. I printed a new one today, I substitued walnuts for the pecans, since that was all I had....I can't wait to make again!! Thanks Paula!! love your shows so much too....I think it was all the butter that made it so rich!!!

This would have been better with half half the sugar. I will try this recipe with half the sugar next time, it was too sweet to even enjoy. I was disappointed. I would also leave the topping off.
