It is a staple recipe for us. We are only 2 and, as you know, this makes a lot so I freeze individual portions with my Food saver. I leave the potatoes out and add them when I recook. (They don't freeze well. I usually use Better than Boullion beef flavor and chicken broth. But I never play around with the seasonings for the broth. I always use short ribs. Yum. Always great!

I have made this dozens of times, it is my favorite. I do substitute some of the veggies and beans at the end of the list, but the base of this soup is the best. I do use short ribs, I think they have a great beefy flavor.

My husband has declared this one of his signature dishes. He follows the recipe as printed. Our family and friends all have enjoyed this soup. We were having withdrawal and he made this in high 90 degree temperatures last month.

What a great soup recipe! I substituted Rib Eye Steak for the meat, but have used the chuck roast also. Both are fantastic.

Great recipe. I reduced salt like other reviewers stated and it was plenty. Also ended up using half (already cut stew beef and the other half boneless beef short rib. Perfect combination without as much fat. Omitted pasta. Everyone loved it.

THis soup is very good. I used homemade egg noogles instead of elbow macaroni. I also don't like okra so that was omitted. Beef short ribs tend to be very fatty. Using a boneless chuck roast is easier to handle and has more meat. Paul is such a great cook!

I have been making this for years because it is SOOOO GOOD!! Seems like a lot of prep, but mixing the dry seasonings together first makes it easier, as well as putting the veggies in a large bowl to dump in all at once. Use short ribs if you can, and I too use beef broth, low-sodium. And I omit the pasta. This rivals my grandmother's I had as a kid and always LOVED! Getting ready to make some for this unusually cool Houston day. Just my husband and me, sports all day, and yummy soup...Life Is So Good!!
