One of the best okra and tomato recipes I have found. I love okra when it is in season. I have never heard of removing fuzz from okra, so needless to say I skipped that part.

My family loved this recipe. I added 5 slices of turkey bacon instead of regular bacon. I used a 28 oz. can of crushed tomatoes instead of diced. We have had this for dinner the past two nights. I plan to make it often. Thanks for such a great recipe.

Paula's recipe was basic, but once I added, salt, oregano, parsley, and saz'on, and red pepper for a little kick, it was DELICIOUS!

WOW - this recipe was terrific - so easy to use, and the outcome was fabulous - even my ten and eight year old boys loved it. I made a couple of substitutions - since I don't know what chicken base is I just used low sodium chicken broth. Also, I used fresh summer ripe tomatoes as I wanted to take advantage of the season. The dish was yummy. A slight sweetness balanced with the savoryness of the bacon and earthiness of the okra and tomatoes. A definite keeper for the files!

I serve this at lots of get togethers where people tell me they don't like okra. There's never any left over. I make this a little leaner by substituting tasso for the bacon. I gives a little extra zip.

I knew as soon as I read your recipe this was the same as my family has made for at least three generations. My paternal grandmother was from Savannah.
I made this and I was right same taste. Thank you Paula I had forgotten this over the years.
I would add one suggestion to the recipe, my family used stale bread or toasted bread torn or cubed in with the tomatoes and okra/

I did not expect my kids to like this but I love okra. I used frozen okra and left it slightly crispy. It was wonderful and even better the second day.
