This tomato pie was terrible, terrible! The mayonaise was pretty nasty with the tomatoes, what a waste of time cooking it and wasting the tomatoes, my company did not enjoy it.

I made this pie and brought it to church potluck, and everyone loved it! I've given the recipe to many at church, and have even been asked to make it as a birthday gift! I am making it tonight as a gift for my best friend and her husband, she just had a baby.

I agree that this recipe is good conceptually. However, like some (albeit a minority of the other reviewers, I think that the mayo taste is just too much and overwhelms the taste of the tomatoes.
I've experimented a bit and I like using half the amount of cheese and 1/3 cup sour cream and 1/3 cup mayo. You still get that great creaminess but the fresh tomatoes can shine through. Try it yourself and see what you think.

My aunt was the first person who tried this recipe. She brought it tot a family dinner and we were all a little hesitant at first to try it, but after we did we beg her to bring it whenever we get together. Definitely a winner with our family!

Even though I forgot to salt and drain the tomato slices, we still enjoyed the pie. Unfortunately the pie was way too runny and I had to blot it out with paper towels. However the next day the pie congealed and was tastier. Next time I will follow the directions and modify a few ingredients like adding less mayo and cheese.

We LOVE this recipe and make it every year with the home grown tomatoes. But it's really rich and can be a tad greasy. When I wanted an appetizer version that wouldn't be as filling or as rich, I created a crostini version. Slice a baguette thinly, spray with olive oil and toast until lighly golden. Then I made the filling as is with lowfat cheeses, put the green onion and chopped basil into the mayo mixture. Slice and drain your tomatoes to get rid of juice, top each bread slice with a piece of tomato and then spread spread with the mayo mixture. Bake at 400 for about 10-12 minutes.
They were great and a less greasy, bite sized version. Try it!

This is the best savory pie I have ever had. Even my sister who does not like tomatoes likes this pie. My four and five year olds also love it.
This recipe has been handed out to many many people!! I did adjust it just a little and decreased the mayo some. I have also made this without basil and used fresh oregano which was also very good. Regular onion works in place of green onion as well.
