This reminds me of bluebell! I read a lot of readers say that it's too sweet, well when you freeze ice cream it reduces the sweetness. I wish she would be specific with the milk amount because obviously not all ice cream makers have a fill line. I also had to divide the batches. Overall rich and sweet.

Excellent! Growing up we always had a family reunion on July 4th out by the lagoon. After we went back to my grandmother's, out came the ice cream machine and she made usually homemade peach in one and the other would be strawberry, vanilla or pineapple. I recently got an ice cream maker and remembered what the ingredients were, but not the amounts. I did a search based on what I remembered and found this recipe. This ice cream is summer and childhood in a bowl. It is sweet and creamy and the condensed milk adds a certain flavor you can't really duplicate. Peach or vanilla have always been my favorites, with strawberry close behind. I've never had it cured in the freezer because it never lasted long enough to make it to the freezer. I can't wait to make this for my husband! Thanks Paula!

This is my go to ice cream recipe. Use this as a base and you can make endless varieties. My most recent are Pumpkin and eggnog. For the pumpkin just blend in a 15oz. can and a tsp. of pumpkin pie spice before the milk. For the eggnog flavor use eggnog instead of milk yum! I have found to use only 1 cup of sugar and keep the milk to 2 cups. I'm using a 6qt. ice cream maker so the fill line was way up there on my first couple of batches. Also ladies and men this recipe can go fat free and semi sugar free. I used fat free condensed milk, fat free evaporated milk, the liquid eggs that have nothing in them, sugar substitute and fat free milk. SHHH. just dont tell Paula

Well, this recipe for vanilla ice cream is right up there with my Dad's recipe of many, many years ago. He passed away three years ago, and I never wrote down his recipe. I longed for a rich vanilla ice cream recipe, and now I found it in Paula Deen's. I made it in my 1 1/2 quart ice cream maker and used about half of it and finished it with the whole milk. It worked perfectly, and I still have enough to make a second batch! Thanks so much for the wonderful, creamy, rich as can be ice cream. It rivals our local favorite Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream and is so easy and quick to make. It brings back my childhood. Love it!

This is one of the best home made ice cream recipes. If you make it in the right size freezer then there is just enough sugar. My kids and neighbors love this one.

This recipe is great only if you use 1 cup of sugar instead of 2 cups that she suggested. Otherwise, it's super sweet.

This ice cream was the best. I used more heavy cream to make up for the 1% milk. Worked great! Also have an awesome tip for the fall.....I added about 3/4 cup to 1 cup of pure pumpkin from the can to make pumpkin ice cream and it was to die for! I used a regular modern ice cream maker and it worked just fine. I mixed everything before hand and poured it in the maker and my kids woudn't leave it alone! This is a staple for all flavors!

It's a great ice cream recipe, very simple and very quick. I think it would be helpful if FN posted things such as yields and size of vessels/machines with the recipes. Perhaps the need to cut back on the sugar comes from using a smaller ice cream maker than Paula does. I know in my Cuisinart 2-quart, I had very little room to add milk, so I split the batch and added a bit more milk to each batch. Turned out great! I will definitely use this recipe again.
