I use more candied Cherries then directed too! These are a favorite! My father loves these and makes me make them for him every year! I have to buy extra candied cherries so I will have them later in the year like Easter, when retailers aren't carring them anymore! LOVE LOVE these cookies!

this is the first time i made cookies in my life, it was pretty simple and easy. they were yummy yummy, my husband and i could not stop eating, i thought they were better than the ones i buy in Marks and Spencers which were the best cookies i ever ate. i used 1.5 sticks of butter and used hazel nuts and pistachios and berry mix dry fruit instaed of cherries and macadamia as i cannot get hold of them, it smells so good even before baking. we absolutely loved them, thank u paula. i will try your oat meal cookies too. its so simple and easy to make. wonderful. can i freeze the dough and use it for later, if so how long should i keep out of freezer before baking?

I followed the advise of others made the following changes:

    1 Increased butter to 1 1/2 sticks
2 Added 1/4 tsp. almond extract for extra flavor
3 Replaced the candied cherries with dried cherries (not cherry flavored cranberries, but actual dried cherries
4 Used a cookie scoop, but pressed them down just a bit. We prefer our cookies a little thicker and not so flat.
    Thanks, Paula!

These cookies are chewy & crunchy at the same time, and very sweet! I didn't have any macadamias or cherries, so I used almonds (very rough chopped & the cherry flavor dried cranberries. They were easy to make, and taste soooo good! Thanks, Paula!

I made these for Christmas, and everyone enjoyed them but they weren't memorable. They're tasty though, love the cherries so I added about a cup of them. Definitely add some extra butter (the recipe is wrong! Flatten the cookies out a bit before baking to have a nicer looking cookie (like the ones pictured here but don't flatten too much or they bake extra thin and end up being a bit hard to bite into. Happy baking!

After reading everyone else?s comments, I thought I should add my changes as well. Many people said it needed more flavor. In addition to the vanilla extract, I added a drop of orange extract with my first attempt. Tonight will be my next attempt and I think I?ll add 2 to 3 drops (sorry for not an exact measure. It decreases the sweetness a bit and adds flavor. Also, as with others, I used craisins instead of cherries (since I couldn?t find them and cranberry goes well with orange. This time I?m going to add the extra butter as other suggested and try not to burn the batch, as I did the first time around. Wish me luck...

Great Cookies! They are beautiful and not common. After making the recipe I looked at the reviews and agree with some of the other comments that the butter needs to be doubled in this recipe. Next time I will make with double the amount of butter, also would double the cherries to make the color pop a little bit.

This is my 3rd year making these. They are a Christmas favorite now. So much flavor, just makes your mouth happy.

One stick of butter is not correct for this recipe. You can tell when you cream the butter with the sugars--it doesn't get fluffy like a cookie dough should be at this point. When I saw that it wasn't "creaming", I added another half stick of butter and it looked perfect. The only other thing I did differently was to add more cherries. It makes the cookie look so pretty. It was crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. My husband's favorite Christmas cookie used to be Paula's Loaded Oatmeal Raisin cookie, but not anymore!!
