    I changed the recipe a tad by adding BACON instead of sausage and I didn't add the bread, mustard or nutmeg. My family and office loves this recipe. They talk about it all day, asking when are you going to make it again. YUMMY!!!

    Made this for Easter Brunch today and it was a HUGE success. I browned a bag of Potatoes O'Brien in a half stick of butter in one pan and a pound of sweet Italian Sausage in another. Generously butter a 9 x 13 pan, layer 1st - potatoes, 2nd - 1/2 of the sausage, 3rd - a couple of handfuls of cheese, 4th - the bread, 5th - rest of the sausage, pour egg mixture over all and let set for 1.5 hours. Bake for 40 minutes, top with a little more cheddar, bake about 5 more minutes until the cheese is melted - YUMMY!

    I made this for New Year's Day and it definitely needed some modifications. The cheese turned out overdone and crunchy, so next time I try it, I would incorporate it into the rest of the ingredients. Also, my husband suggested the has browns be put on top instead of the bottom. I see that some of the other reviewers browned the has browns and it seemed to work better for them. Otherwise I thought the flavor was good, however, my picky children wouldn't eat it.

    Wow, Paula usually has the best recipes, but this one missed the mark. The bread turned out slimy and there was way too much cheese in my opinion. Not good and all five of my guests agreed.

    I grew up in Alabama and breakfast casserole's were the first I learned how to cook. This casserole we won't make again. The mustard overpowered the casserole which may be because I used a dijon mustard. I will stick to using mustard powder for now on. The hash browns were soggy and the onion (we used half was still too much. This recipe was disappointing.

    I made this the first time catering a "Black Friday" breakfast for my good friend's extended family, and it was a hit. (I halved the recipe with no problems for my husband and myself that weekend. This weekend, the same friend has two guests coming to stay, and she wants a 2/3 size recipe of it for them too. I use a multi-grain-and-seed bread for extra fiber and nutrients.Try serving it with a fresh-fruit salad, and you will have no complaints!

    This is a family favorite! I've use different kinds of bread - depending on what day-old bread is on the discount rack at the bakery - and it's always perfect. I love that I can prepare it the night before and have a wonderful breakfast treat in the morning.

    Love it!! Tweaked a bit with 1pkg Philadelphia cooking cream (Italian Herbs & Spices and 1cp. goats milk to replace milk, added 8oz colby chunks in the middle with 1side ham n 1/2 Sweet Ital. sausage mixed throughout n frozen tater tots w/ french bread chunks n 5 ital. cheese blend on top of 12oz ex shrp chedd. After 6-7 mistrials this was the tastiest tweak. ENJOY!! Thanks Paula for this rich, tasty, filling recipe. Its WONDERFUL... especially @ 7mo prego. Its my fave dish. ;
