I made this as a savory dinner casserole. I used heavily seasoned hamburger meat to replace the sausage and didn't add as much of the egg and milk mixture or bread.
I also didn't cook the hash browns. I defrosted the potatoes and added garlic powder, extra onion, and a can of chopped green chilies before putting them in the pan. I think this is a great basic recipe for busy weeknight dinners or early weekday breakfasts.

Everyone who ate the casserole really like the flavors, taste and texture, though it is very rich.

I followed the recipe almost to the T. I used 2% milk and a little less cheese. I made it the night before and just set it in the fridge overnight. The next morning I baked it in the oven. It is a lot of food so I put it in 2 dishes. Made the other one for dinner that night, because I had guests coming over. We all loved it and thought the flavors were great together and it is very filling. The next time I make which will be next week. I am going to add some green bell pepper to the potato and onion. IF YOU MADE THIS AND IT DIDN'T TURN OUT GREAT. THEN YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO COOK. AND IF YOUR FOOD BURNS. SHAME ON YOU FOR LETTING IT! THX PAULA this dish is very delicious!!!!

I thought this was terrible. This dish is a good example of why people eat breakfast items separate on their plate.

I made this for breakfast this morning after watching paula make this yesterday on her show. I did make some adjustments and used what I had on hand. I used Can't Beleive Its not Butter rather than butter; 2% milk rather than whole milk; fresh potatoes (squeezed the water out of them rather than frozeen ones; I used half chedder cheese and half mozzorela cheese (made with skim milk. I didn't have french bread so I just used the two ends of the a loaf of wheat bread since I usally toss them out anyway. I didn't use nutmeg or mustard of any kind and even with these changes it came out great for the first try. I will add more seasoning to the potatoes next time I make this and perhaps cook them in the pan with the butter a little longer. The family loved it and I will make it again...great for a potluck.

I assemble this recipe on Christmas Eve and leave iit in the refrigerator overnight. On Christmas morning while opening presents, it's in the oven and ready when we are. You can leave the kitchen and join the family. I've done it with bacon, sausage and ham and each time, it's a winner. This could be for Easter breakfast or anytime you want. Try it, experiment as to what your family likes, and ENJOY!

This is a "basic" recipe made for adjusting to personal taste. I omiited the extra bread, properly seasoned and cooked my potatoes almost the whole way first, seasoned my eggs and reduced the cheese a bit.
I will never understand how morons who admittedly don't follow the recipe can write a bad review. SHAME ON ANYONE who doesn't completely read the recipe (and a couple of the reviews first. If you write a review you should have the brains to read a few before you make it and use a bit of common sense to alter it if needed. THIS IS EGGS, POTATOES AND CHEESE people-if you cant make it taste good, then you are the problem, not the recipe!

I made this casserole to bring into work today, and my co-workers loved it. The only thing I did different was leave out the breaed and added mushrooms and green peppers, it was delicious. Being a single person I never get the opportunity to cook dishes like this for myself, but lately have been learning alot on how to cut recipes down to accomodate one person and not 6-8. I will continue making this dish when I have to bring something for work or a family gathering. I thought it was VERY Good. I have made a lot of Paula's recipes and they have always went over well, and for me they are "never fail recipes" Thanks Paula for sharing your recipes with us.
