It was great, but I wondered if I could use 2% milk instead of whole milk- does anyone know?

This recipe rocks. Granted, it's sinful, but it was amazingly good.

Actually I did this casserole the night before and let it sit. I was carful about the bread layer and only added half, per others comments. I think that was just right. I also think sitting overnight may have made the difference for the bread layer. The only substitute I used was kielbasa instead of sausage. Simply what I had on hand and we prefer it in most cases.

I brought this for a breakfast casserole over the weekend and everyone loved it. I only got to bring home an empty pan!

This was delicious and easy to make. For those that were worried about the calorie count of this dish...ITS CHRISTMAS! You wont eat it everyday, and who wants to worry about calories one day a year. Maybe you should spend your time worried about spending money you don't have, on people you don't like for stuff they don't want anyway and enjoy this beautiful breakfast!

I changed the recipe a tad by adding one medium green pepper chopped to the onions when I sauteed them. It was fantastic!

Like most, I cooked the hash browns to a light golden brown (they absorb moisrture from the eggs. I also used Italian Sausage and cooked the hash browns in 2-3 tablespoons of its drippings instead of butter. I also cut the bread in half and turned it in with the hash browns instead of layering - based on readers dislike of it as its own layer - and it turned out great. Since I was also making French Toast for this brunch I completely ommited the nutmeg. I went 3 to 1 Parm to Cheddar (I'm Italian... It ended up being a very savory compliment to the french toast and other brunch dishes. Thanks Paula

That probably goes without saying for most of Paula's recipes, but the calorie content of this recipe kind of grossed me out. If you prepare it with real butter, regular sausage, 2% milk, real eggs, and full-fat cheese, the entire casserole has 5,933 calories. If you cut it into 8 servings, each slice has 742 calories. For 6 servings, each slice has 989 calories.

That being said, it's pretty good.
