I have always baked cakes from a mix, never completely from scratch. This is an easy recipe, and the cake is fantastic. My entire family loves for me to make it. A BIG hit. It's so rich, and the cream cheese icing is terrific.

The only thing I could taste in this cake was flour. It was awful and ruined my Valentine dinner!!

I found the Red Velvet Cake recipe to be less than par. The frosting was superb but the cake itself needs some work...a lot...I was disappointed it came from Paula Dean...not impressed!

This cake was awesome!! it was the most moist cake i have ever tasted and had guests wondering how i made it so moist!! calls for a whole bottle of food coloring but i only used about 3/4 bottle and it was still VERY red. I also used a coconut frosting recipe instead of the cream cheese frosting but will definately try that next time!!!

I love this recipe. I am a true fan of red velvet cake and I am not a cook. But this recipe was simple and it was great. The cake is moist and it just has all the right things. I will keep this recipe for life. Thanks.

The recipe called for the whole box of powder sugar and the frosting turned out sooo sweet. I've made cream cheese frosting before and I used less confectioner sugar and it was perfect. I would probably taste it a little bit at a time before dumping the whole box in. The cake itself was just blah. I've never had red velvet cake but I think I'd rather have plain chocolate cake. It was rather bland to me. I probably wouldnt make this cake again. I think the other Paula Dean recipe that calls for butter would probably have more flavor.
