This recipe was a let down. I read some reviews on it, there was one that said that there was not enough flavor, so I added a tablespoon of cocoa instead of the teaspoon called for. The consistancy is very soft...too soft. The color is not as red as the picture shows, it could be that I added the extra cocoa, however, I did add the same amount as called for. There was alot of dishes and clean up to make this. I wont recommend this to anyone. Opted for a box cake instead.

I was so disappointed. There was very little flavor to the cake. I thought I had perhaps misread how much cocoa to put in. But no, I had put the right amount. I think more cocoa and maybe even a dash of salt would have given it more flavor. Johnnie Gabriel's Bakery/Deli made this cake for my son-in-laws groom's cake and it didn't taste anything like this. It had flavor! Wondering if there is a misprint in the ingredients.

I made this cake on Valentine's Day for my family and they loved it. It was easy and much better than a store bought cake mix. I have been weaning myself off of them anyway and this one just proved once again that you can make a wonderful cake with the ingrediants on hand. YAY!!

I made this for Father's Day and my husband and everyone loved it. It was very moist. Be careful not to overbake the edges were just beginning to get dry and I baked it for the recommended 25 minutes. The frosting was to die for. A little too nutty for my husband but if you love pecans it's a go. Good luck it's a keeper in my recipe book.

Beyond disappointing. This cake is red and very moist but thats about all it has going for it. We've dubbed it "water cake" if that gives you any hint of what the flavor is like...it tastes of nothing. Very strange. I actually looked back at the recipe after eating it thinking i may have left out an ingredient or several ingredients it was so tasteless. In all fairness the ingredients and even their quantities are almost identical to every other red velvet recipe on this site - so i imagine they all are equally lacking in flavor. I found one on allrecipes that is worth every calorie: search for red velvet, choose the one submitted by McCormick...yum!!

I loved this recipe. It was easy to use and so tasty. The center was so so and delicate tasting! I was supposed to make these for my daughter's Valentine's day class party, but have opted instead to have a little party of my own!!!!!!

Wonderful cake and super easy!
Made this yesterday for my boyfriend's birthday, but added blue coloring instead because that's his favorite color... loved every crumb of it.
Quick question... when beating the eggs and sugar together, how long should it be beaten for?
Quick tip... when baking any chocolate cake, grease pan well and dust with sifted cocoa instead of flour. Don't worry, cake comes out of the pan easily as if flour was used and to me, it looks a lot better!

Oh My Gosh! My entire family felt like they had died and gone to heaven. This was my first attempt at a cake from scratch. It was easy and absolutely delicious. Not sure that I'll ever make a boxed cake again. The frosting is fabulous too(do not cheat and go to a can!
