Ingredients
  • For the pan dusting:
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • For the cake:
  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • For the topping:
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 teaspoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 3/4 cup pecans pieces
Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

In a small bowl, stir 1/2 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon together. Butter a tube pan well and liberally coat it with the cinnamon sugar.

In a mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the butter until smooth. With the mixer running, slowly add the sugar and mix. Add the eggs and mix until the mixture is light and fluffy. Sift the sifted flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt together. Working in batches, add them to the butter-sugar mixture, alternating with dollops of sour cream. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.

Make the topping: In a medium bowl, combine the brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Add the butter and, using your fingertips, pinch the ingredients together into a sandy, crumbly mixture. Add the pecans and mix. Sprinkle the mixture over the cake.

Bake until risen and browned, about 35 to 40 minutes. Let cool in the pan then turn out. Serve in slices.

    This is a great coffee cake. I paid $12.00 for the same cake at a bakery recently. Only they poured the topping into the middle before baking and placed whole pecans on top. Very pretty and delicious.
    I made this yesterday and it got rave reviews! I think it would be even better with some lemon or orange zest in the topping. I definitely agree with layering the filling in the middle as well. All in all, very good solid recipe for coffee cake. I will definitely make it again!
    Cake is moist and it's texture is fine, but the cake doesn't actually taste like anything. The cake needs at least a little bit of vanilla, maybe add some streusel in the middle...
     
    Easy, fairly quick to prepare and very tasty. The whole family enjoyed it.
     

     
    It is very good if you substitute cream cheese and a little cream for the sour cream as well as add a little vanilla extract to the topping.
    I just finished eating it and that was soo good! Everyone here had TWO pieces! I love how you out sugar on the bottom too, gives it a little something extra! BEST EVER has an amazing taste! fill the room with a warm flavor

    What a disappointment! As I sliced the cake, the topping crumbled off! I had to sprinkle it on top of the sliced cake to take to an outing! I will NOT try another of Ms. Gand's recipes. The recipe took FARRRRR longer than 20 minutes to prepare. Most disappointing!
    The cake was finally moist! I've been looking for a moist coffee cake and this is it. The topping is wonderful. Next time, I'll make a double batch of the topping and run some through the middle!
    This is the second year I have made this for Christmas Day brunch. It is always such a big hit. It is very moist and easy to make. I plan on making this for years to come!

    This is practically the same recipe as the old fashioned Sour Cream Coffee Cake which I have made many times using pecans instead of walnuts. I have never brought it anywhere without it disappearing very quickly. The Sour Cream Coffee Cake recipe is better.

    I have made this recipe numerous times and have yet to receive anything but compliments on it! I bake once a month for the local ladies "birthday club", and this is their favorite!
    This isn't a "you've got everything in your cupboard, just whip it together" recipe. It was good but the kids didn't eat it.

    I got more raves over this cake than any other. I will say that i made 1.5 times the recipe for the topping as i love that part, and when I butterd the Pan I caked it on the sides and pressed the cinnamon sugar into it utilizing the full amount. What a dynamite recipe.
    I rarely try recipes sight unseen, but this was an impromptu cake baking day! I found this recipe and made it right away. I took it to work and it was gone in about 10 minutes. Everyone loved it! It was so moist and delicious, without being too sweet and sugary. A great way to start the day!
