The recipe was easy, the results were beautiful and the cookies tasted delicious.

Although it did take time for the dough to chill between steps, that was clearly stated on the recipe, so I planned other baking during the waits. I used "pure peppermint extract", the flavor was just minty enough. There were definitely 24 beautifully shaped cookies cut from the middle of the roll that I wrapped up as lollipops; they made our gift baskets look really festive. The hollow odd shapes at the ends of the roll tasted fine; I pinched them together and baked them for our family to munch.

This was a darling idea; I'm saving the recipe to use again (maybe with other colors/flavors next time. Thank you Jeanie Collins for sharing!

This recipe reminds me of one that we made as kids that was in the shape of a candy cane. Before we would bake them though, we would take peppermint candy and crush it in a bag and sprinkle it on the top of the cookie before baking. It makes it look finished and adds to the hidden peppermint taste. I thought "why not do it with these?" and it worked. I think they look even better and have that mint taste that everyone here says is lacking. Try it!

I don't understand how people can rate a recipe that they didn't follow. One reviewer used purchased dough, so they didn't even attempt the recipe just the presentation! Whatever. I followed the recipe, they were pretty and tasted like peppermint sugar cookies, which is exactly what I expected. Very cute Christmas idea.

I am not a baker and these cookies were pretty easy. The only annoying part was waiting for them to cool after each step. One thing I would watch out for would be to make sure to make the dough into rectangles. I made mine into ovals, thinking it wouldn't matter as long as they were the same size, and it does. Half of my cookies were hollow in the middle...Other than that, I followed the recipe exactly and they turned out great. So yummy! (I didn't put the sticks in either

but I cheated a little. I've wanted to make these ever since I saw them on Paula's cookie swap 2008 but never had the time so I used two rolls of purchased sugar cookie dough. One roll I colored with red food coloring, then rolled each one out like the recipe says, then put the red on top of the white dough and rolled and sliced them, put a stick in them and baked them. They came out so cute. After they cooled, I put a plastic bag over the cookie part and tied each with a different colored Christmas ribbon and placed in a sand bucket with green colored sugar. Everyone at our office party took them home to kids and Grand kids. They are the cutest things I've ever seen. Definitely a keeper.

My husband made these for Christmas and they were an instant favorite. He didn't add the lollipop sticks per previous comments. Batch # 2 he added a cream cheese frosting to the cookies, but I think the family liked them better plain. My birthday is dec.28th and I requested these cookies instead of a cake !

I was iffy about the mixed reviews but still made them for Christmas eve. It was my first time making cookies from scratch. We usually just make sugar cookies from the packaged mix. The only thing different that I did was use mint extract instead of the peppermint. They came out perfect. It was like a minty sugar cookie. The aroma filled the house and set the mood. They were supposed to be for the kids (and Santa but I let the adults have a taste. They were loved by everyone.

I had such high hopes for this recipe. I will say that once they were cooked, they looked spectacular. However, I either absentmindedly forgot the peppermint extract or it wasn't enough for this amount of cookie dough. They were very bland.

I agree with other reviewers that it was a difficult dough to work with. It was very stiff and I wondered if I was going to be able to roll it out. But by working it slowly and carefully, I was able to make it swirl. I ended freezing the dough - basically because I mixed my Christmas cookies two weeks before I planned on baking them off. This made it very easy to slice the cookies.

If I do make these again, I will add more peppermint extract and I'll slice them thinner than the 1/2" specified.

Taste like a slightly minty sugar cookie. Very easy to make. I did not follow the directions about the pdrd sugar etc. I just rolled each flavor out, placed one on top of the other and rolled them into a single roll. Refrigerated for five hours, sliced, put on sticks, sprinkled with sanding sugar and baked. They look super cute and taste good.

I saw this cookie recipe made on Paula's Cookie swap. Thought they looked so cute and couldn't wait to make them myself. I planned to turn them into lollipops and create "planters" to give to co-workers and friends. So I made up a double batch, following the recipe to the letter. The only thing that i did differently was refrigerate for 24 hrs instead of 2 because it got too late to bake them after all the mixing and rolling. I was tempted to leave out the peppermint and add more vanilla, but chose to follow the recipe. So I ran home after work to bake them. They did turn out cute, however, they tasted terrible to me with a sickening artificial peppermint taste that was overpowering. My husband took one bite and spit it out. I ended up tossing the entire mess in the trash. What a waste of time and ingredients. If, and it's a big if, I ever try this again I am looking for a different recipe, and definitely no peppermint extract. Since I can't give less than 1 star it's for the cuteness factor only. Sorry Paula, but did you actually taste these cookies?
