Haylie knows how to make a memorable scene, and it's not just because she's an actress. The host of Cooking Channel's The Real Girl's Kitchen, also known for her role in Napoleon Dynamite, loves decorating for a party almost as much as she loves cooking for one. For a recent movie night — a last big get-together with girlfriends before her first baby was born in the spring — Haylie turned this backyard into a theater and put some of her favorite flea-market finds to great use.

"Growing up, I watched The Breakfast Club and thought, 'I want to get locked in school like that!'"

True Concessions

Haylie set up an old-fashioned concession stand in her yard. Her go-to gear:

• Galvanized metal pails and scoop: for popcorn and popcorn refills (pails and scoop sold at craft stores)

• Craft paper: for lining the pails

• Vintage soda crate: for displaying retro candy

• French fry boxes: for holding candy

• Cellophane bags and twine: for individual servings of spiced nuts

• Tiered metal stand

• Mason jars and colorful straws: for root beer floats

Zesty Ranch Dip

"When I'm entertaining, I try to have one great healthy option, like crudites, and lots of little indulgent options."

Bananas Foster Popcorn

With a sugary rum, banana extract and cinnamon coating, her popcorn is inspired by dessert — and it's more sweet than savory.

Retro Sodas on Ice

During the movie, Haylie served classic root beer floats in Mason jars.

Paprika-Rosemary Spiced Nuts

Haylie adds a touch of brown sugar to her mixed nuts recipe for the perfect salty-sweet balance.

And ... Scene!

Haylie put her decorating skills to good use and turned the pool area into a cozy theater. Some key pieces:

• Knit poufs

• Mismatched rugs

• Wooden apple crates: for side tables

• Paper lanterns: for the pool (she glued clear plastic lids to the bottoms and put battery-powered lights inside)

• White string lights

• Old wheelbarrow: for holding ice and retro sodas

• Assorted lanterns
