i tweeked the recipe a bit but it came out amazing! my daughter isn't too big on veggies so i used stuff i could chop enough that she wouldn't see. so i used garlic, mushrooms, and onions. then instead of using white potatoes i used sweet potatoes. and instead of paprika i used sugar and cinnamon then after broiling it we topped it with cheese and popped it in the microwave for 20 seconds to melt it. IT WAS AMAZING! i especially loved the fact that my husband hates sweet potatoes and he is the one who ate most of it. he went back 4 or 5 times. my daughter who is the pickiest out of everyone ate it all too!

definitely a tasty dish! I used chicken broth instead of cream for the potatoes, it was perfectly rich and I think using the cream would have been too heavy...

Excellent dish, highly recommend. First time is a little slow going as there's a few steps but after that it's very easy to make. It's a nice change from my mother's recipe growing up, plain beef, corn and potatos layered, no gravy. The gravy really adds something extra, gives it a nice heartiness, and the dish reheats well for lunch.

(Note: I do add onion powder and garlic powder to the meat/pea mix and I also cook the carrots and onions from the start with the meat, I don't add later, to give them some flavor and soften them up a bit.

I did find it was a bit bland as-is, but adding some A-1 to the gravy and salting each component just a bit more was helpful. Overall, it was an easy and solid weeknight dinner.

Whoa! Made this tonight for dinner and was very pleased with how it turned out. I followed the recipe exactly (used chicken stock instead of cream for potatoes as suggested for healthy alternativeand was really happy with the flavors. I honestly do not understand how some said it lacked flavor? Maybe if you didn't salt the water for the potatoes or something.....very puzzled by those reviews.
Try this recipe...especially as we approach the cooler months. You will not be disappointed! Thanks RR for another knock out meal!

Having read the comments, I tried a couple of little things to intensify flavor. I used over 2 lbs of ground lamb seasoned with 1 tsp. of salt, and fried it with olive oil and diced garlic. I fried the onions separately in olive oil. I also used a cup of shredded carrots. Then I reduced the mixture for about 1/2 hour. For the potatoes, I used a 2 bags of frozen mashed potatoes and used 2 egg yolks, 4 tbs. of low fat greek sour cream, and Imagine organic chicken stock.

I baked in a convection oven at 375 degrees for half hour, then added enough sharp cheddar to cover top and popped back into oven for another 8 minutes.

I stopped using ground beef years ago.... heart thing you know. and made this recipe with ground turkey. I went to answer the phone, returning to my husband eating the caserole before I got a chance to put it in the oven... Its a hit at my house. Thanks

my son had his wisdom teeth out recently and when he was waking up from anesthesia, he asked if I would make him this recipe as soon as he could chew. One of our all time favourites!
