We love shepherds pie... and everyone's version is different. I LOVED this recipe... not too soupy, and the gravy wasn't overpowering and thick.

If you are crunched for time, buy ready to mash potatoes in the frozen section... they steam in a bag in the microwave, and come in russet, yukon, or red depending on your preference.

Overall, we made this meal in about 25 minutes with the potato shortcut... we LOVED it... and will probably add this to our MUST MAKE recipes every couple weeks.

with a few modifications, this is a great recipe! first, i cut the beef down to 1 lb and the potatoes down to 1.25 lbs. doing this allowed it to be more saucy and still fed 4 easily. i also cut down the onion to about 1/4 of an onion an d added some leek and green onion (just the white portion. i kept everything else the same and it was perfect! great recipe though i must agree that it took closer to one hour than half an hour. super yummy and will make this again and again!

I had high hopes for this recipe. I made it once, according to directions, and it was as bland as it could be. So, I made it again, with the following adjustments:
-add 1/2 tsp. chili powder to the meat mixture
-add a heaping 1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper to the meat mixture
    -double the Worcestershire sauce
After those adjustments, it was still bland. So, in each bowl I served it with several dashes of Worcestershire sauce over each serving, and I put a blob of sour cream on the side.

The final verdict is, after all my adjustments, it was still a little bland and it tastes nothing at all like the Shepherd's Pies I ate frequently while I lived in England as a Cambridge student. I really can't recommend this recipe to anyone.

A really solid meat and potato, comfort food type dish. Season the meat, season the gravy, and season the mashers as you would normally do and that helps eliminate the blandness.

I mostly followed the directions on this (which I usually don't do, but since I didn't have peas I used some diced fresh zuccini and added them with the carrots (about 3 carrots, not just 1. I also used about 2 T (instead of 2 t. worchteshire, and it could use even more. My husband and kids (8yrs and 5yrs ate it right down. It could use a bit more flavor though, I think chopped green onions would be a good topper instead of parsley. Could also use leeks in the meat mixture.
Some posters said they added garlic, but that flavor doesn't seem quite right for this (and I am a garlic LOVER. It think the green onion and/or leek flavor would work better. Also can add more veges, and could have a little more gravy.

Definately took more than 30 min, I'd say with all the prep time, give yourself no more than 1 hour. I used ground turkey instead of beef and sprinkled garlic powder on it plus little bit of salt and pepper. Because I did not have peas I added shopeg (sp? corn. As for the gravy, mine came out little lumpy but you couldn't taste the lumps in the dish itself. I guess they dissolved : Overall, this is a very tasty and fairly quick recipe! A+

I'm not an expert in Shepherd's Pie but if I follow the instructions, then it will turn out very bland. Also, I don't think anyone can pull this dish off in 30 minutes unless you cut corners (not that it's a bad thing. Anyway, I took others' advice and put garlic powder in the beef, and actually triple the Worcestershire sauce. Definitely drain the beef before you put in the veggies. I would suggest to put the peas together with onion and carrot. I also put garlic powder in the potato plus 2 tablespoon of butter. I topped the potatoes with shredded cheddar cheese instead of parsley and paprika (that didn't sound appetizing to me at all!. First baked at 350 for 20 minutes, then broiled for 5 more minutes. I like what I prepared, and so did hubby.

I've made this Shepherd's Pie with ground sirloin twice now - once last fall & the other time on St. Patty's Day to serve at a casual party with friends. Both times came out excellent & delicious. Instead of making Rachael's mashed potatoes, I make the Shepherd's Pie with my own mashed potatoes (using Yukon Golds, a little heavy cream or even 1% milk, a bit of butter, sauteed minced garlic, salt & pepper. Since we like veggies, I add chopped celery, canned whole corn kernels, & extra carrots & peas. These extra veggies make the dish even more colorful. I also make a little extra gravy. Yum!

I love sheppherd's pie and thought it must certainly be more challenging than this to make. Oh, my, so easy and yummy!
For those talking about using substitutions etc. - it only takes 30 minutes for a fresh home-cooked meal. It is definitely worth the health benefits and taste to take the extra few minutes to make a quick rue/gravy and some mashers. It is busy with all the pots at once, but kind of fun and tastes wonderful!!! The way i saved time was to just make the main parts the night before and bake it when it is time to eat tomorrow - it is so good i am even serving it for st. patty's day for a casual dinner with our neighbors. Cant wait! I love making and eating this recipe! thanks rachell!
