I think this is a good base recipe, but it could do with some improvements to increase the taste.
I sauteed chopped celery, carrots and onions at first and added some garlic before adding the ground beef.
While the beef was cooking, I added a handful of parsley and oregano. I also added some freshly cracked pepper and some red pepper flakes.
As far as the gravy goes, I don't think it was necessary to the flavor of the recipe. I just add Worcestershire sauce and a little beef broth directly to the filling and skip out on the calories from the butter & flour. I think this lightens up the dish without taking away from its comfort food properties.
After pouring the filling into a casserole dish, I placed about 6 sliced hard boiled eggs on top of the filling before spreading the potatoes on top.
Hopefully this will kick up the flavor for those of you who think the original recipe is too bland.

I believe the people that said this was the best shepard's pie, obviouisly never had it before. This was very bland, unflaveful. I had to add some ketchup to the sauce, butter to potatoes long with some salt. The worst shepard pie recipe ever. sorry, but let's speak the truth

I have to say this Sheppards Pie is the best home made version I have ever had. To make it in a half and hour everyone thinks it took me all day because thats exactly how it tastes. I use to go to a restaurant around where I live Donovans who was known for there burgers and Sheppard Pie thank God they still have one but it's futher away, but since finding this recipe a while ago and making it alot I've been told I've saved our delicious Sheppard Pie. Now, that's coming from some good oldd time irishmen and women too!!! All I can say is thank you for makeing such a easy and delicious meal that has saved me time and time again ( like tonight for example it's not easy to please everyone and I have two little ones 10 & 4 including my husband and I. This is the recipe if you need a crowd pleaser, and you need it fast. You can add on use whats in your pantry, it's a no brainer and hand down great sheppard pie! Oh, and it gets even better.... The left overs! xoxo Jane, Queens NY

This recipe is quick and so satisfying! I usually buy mixed frozen vegetables and use store made mashed potatoes and add the egg to them to make them brown. Turns out great every time and I no longer need the recipe.

Delicious and easy, but a bit longer than 30 mins. Still a good and VERY filling weekday meal. I added 1 tbsp fresh chopped rosemary to the beef as it was sauteing. I also added 1/2 tsp Kitchen Bouquet to the gravy. It was Yumm-O!! A recipe keeper!!!!

I was looking forward to making this after reading all the great reviews, but was kind of disappointed by the results. to me it was kind of bland. I don't know if I did something wrong, but next time I make it I will change a few things. I'm going to try using onion soup mix instead of regular onion and make the mashed potatoes the way I usually do, with lots of butter, half and half, salt and garlic. Hopefully it will go better next time.
