I think the gravy makes it bland....I have always used a tomato soup/sauce mixture in the browned meat (and never an egg in the potatoes. I've also used canned green beans & carrots (tried frozen, but the flavor wasn't there. Stick with the onions & chopped celery in the meat to add more flavor to it.

I made this recipe on "Pi" day (3/14and in honor of the upcoming St. Patrick's Day celebration. This was the easiest recipe I've ever tried for this particular dish and it turned out great! I added a little ground pork for flavor and used half and half instead of cream for the potatoes. I will definitely be saving this one in the archives for future use. Thanks, Rachael, for another winner.

This is the first time I have ever made Shepherd's Pie and it was a hit. I did 1 pound 90/10 beef and 1 pound Lamb, drained the fat. Added the onions, carrots and added mushrooms too. Extra Worcestershire sauce, some garlic powder, and smoky hot paprika in the filling. I did not use the egg in the potatoes. I didn't have sour cream but I had some creme freche so I used that, but basically made the potatoes like I normally do with milk but with the added CF. I will be making this a lot.

Really great comfort food! Seasoned the ground beef with Montreal Steak Seasoning, and substituted Dale's for the Worcestershire in the gravy. Yum!

I've made this for years now and love it. My partner won't order shepard's pie in restaurants now b/c she is always disappointed that it is not as good as this one. I add extra worscestershire. I never use the lamb b/c it is bland and dry. I use ground beef or ground turkey.
