While the onions cook, slice the apples and douse with a little lemon juice to slow their browning. Arrange the apples and bread on a board or platter.

When the onions are soft and sweet, add the flour and cook for 1 minute. Whisk in the wine, cook for a minute, then whisk in the half-and-half. When the liquid comes up to a bubble, season with nutmeg and cloves and adjust the salt and pepper, to taste.

I hosted a fondue party and wine tasting at our lodge and this was by far everyone's favorite. I had several people ask for the recipe. I would do this one again for sure.

I substituted White Horseradish Cheddar and my family loved it. I also skimped on the nutmeg and cloves and used a good bit of pepper. Rachel is a nutmeg fiend, but alas, I am not.

Made this for Thanksgiving. My family are big-time all-day munchers. I found them eating it hot AND cold....we had to make a run to the store for more pumpernickel bread to keep everyone happy. I see this one in my fondue pot at home for a future party. I'll just remember to overload the pumpernickel!

The dip was good but not as outstanding as I expected and I'm not sure if it's something I did or not... I am curious as to what kind of onions everyone else used. Also I think I used too big of an onion because they took a very long time to cook down. I'm going to try and half the recipe and give it another go to see if I can make some changes.

This sounded so good to me.....I made it exactly as written and was so disappointed with the lack of carmelized onion flavors. There are so many better "dips" out there. There is nothing wrong with it, but......will not make it again..Sorry Rachel!

I liked this dip, but it was not quite what I was expecting it to be. It pretty much tastes and functions as a fondue. I would have liked it to have more of the caramelized onion flavor. It was good with the apples, but I'd definitely classify it as a fondue rather than a dip.
