I loved this! I made this for my hubby and I for our anniversary dinner it was great!!!! I did make some changes.... I used all dried spices because thats what I had on hand, and I didn't have the tomatoes that it called for... I used one can stewed tomatoes, one can of tomato paste and one can of tomato soup (Iknow it sounds strange but it was perfect! I also cooked this in my crockpot over night in stead of the dutch oven (it cooked for about 10 hours on low. I did use all of the onions and potatoes it called for. If you cook in the in crockpot then the onions cook down to a sauce so you really need that many, and the potatoes are perfectly cooked.

This was one of the most delicious things I've ever made. I used a really big, thick sirloin and it was amazingly tender. I loved the layered approach but can imagine that a "dump it all in" approach would work too. It was a one-pot meal for us, although I did serve up some crusty bread with it. Fantastic and can't wait to make it again.

Made this with short ribs. OMG delish. Even my husband loved it and he usually doesn't eat beef.

Made the recipe for the first time for me and my husband, It was very good! meat was tender! potatoes had good flavor being cooked in the tomatoes, and the onions and tomatoes gave off a natural sweetness. Thanks Rachael.

Oh my goodness, this was OUTSTANDING!!! I only have a few changes
For starters, the chuck roast I was able to purchase was a little under three pounds, and I believe the total cooking time I gave it was 3 hours and 10 minutes.
Onions and Potatoes: guys you do NOT need that many!!! I think I maybe used 1-1 and a half LARGE onions, and about 2 and a half small potatoes. Also, my local market was out of fresh basil that day, so I used oregano on the tomatoes, and I used Italian flavored diced tomatoes. I believe the cans are about 14 oz, and I used two of them.
This recipe turned out AMAZING, and I served the shredded meat and flavorful juices over rice. I was pleased with the flavor of the meat, the quantity of leftovers, and the versatility of how they could be served. Next time I make this, I'm going to use the leftovers to make a ragu for some penne pasta, and I think it would also be a great topper for a baked potato

Wow. Broke tradition this Easter and made Grandpa's Braised Beef. It was a hit. The flavors were fantastic and the meat melted in your mouth. I actually prepared the dish in the morning and cooked it later in the day. Absolutely great. Thanks Rachel. I will make this again and again.
