Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unpopped corn kernels
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon chipotle powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Directions

Place popcorn, sugar, oil, chipotle and salt in a large kettle or pot with a tight fitting lid over medium heat. When corn begins to pop, shake the pot constantly. When popping slows, remove from heat and transfer popped kettle corn to a bowl.

To keep the kettle corn sweet, omit the chipotle powder and adjust sugar to 1/3 cup.

    1st Time Success

I had nice results with this recipe. I read one of the reviews before I made it and went by their modifications. I halved... the amount of popcorn because I only made it for my fiance and myself. I used 1/4 cup popcorn kernals, 1/6 cup canola oil, a pinch of seasoning salt, and pinch of sea salt, and 1/6 cup white sugar. I put everything in the pan except the sugar. I just used a saucer because that is all I have for now. The heat was set to high. Once the oil heats up, the popcorns begins to pop and once I hear it, I pour in the sugar and stir it as best I can without popcorn flying out. I was happy with the subtle flavor the seasoning salt adds. Some of the popcorn did have a bit of golden color from the sugar. This was a fun recipe and my fiance and I both are enjoying it.Read more

    A Family Favorite!!!!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
Our family LOVES this recipe. I omit the cayenne pepper, but other than that I make it as directed. I use a whirly pop to... pop it all in. That might make the difference in it not burning. I do think it would be difficult to make in a regular pan and not have it burned. If you have a whirly popper this recipe is a MUST. Enjoy!!! !!!Read more

    No Burning Yet!!!!!!!!!!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
THIS RECIPE IS GREAT!!! LET ME BREAK IT DOWN FOR YOU. 1/2 CUP POPCORN, 1/3 CUP SUGAR, 1/4 CUP OIL, 2 TBS MARGARINE, 1/2 TSP... WHITE SALT, 1/2 TSP SEASONED SALT. ADD EVERYTHING BUT SUGAR TO A LARGE METAL POT WITH A LID ON HIGH HEAT! THIS IS THE FIRST KEY OF NOT BURNING YOUR CORN! STIR WITH A WOODEN SPOON UNTIL BUTTER MELTS, AND THE CORN TURNS WHITE AND SMELLS LIKE POPCORN. ADD YOUR SUGAR AND GIVE A A FINAL STIR WITH YOUR SPOON, AND THEN TOP IT UP. EVERY 30 TO 45 SECONDS GIVE IT SHAKE IN A CIRCULAR MOTION, AND WHEN THE CORN STARTS POPPING, THE SECOND KEY, KEEP THE HEAT UP AND SHAKE IN CIRCLE CONSTANTLY. WHEN THE POPS ARE ABOUT 2 TO 3 SECONDS APART, TAKE OFF THE TOP, AND POUR INTO A WAITING BOWL! SERVE HOT, OR COOL FOR THE KIDS, EITHER WAY ITS GREAT! HAVE MADE NUMEROUS BATCHES, AND HAVE NOT BURNED ONE YET!!!!! = ) U CAN DO IT!!! EAT RESPONSIBLY!!!Read more

    My Method to Reduce Burning

Rated: 2 stars out of 5
First, I think the recipe directions are lacking detail and it calls for way too much salt and not enough sugar. I... personally cut the salt in half and use 1/3 to 1/2 cup sugar. I use a standard stainless steel stew pot with lid, about 10" in diameter. That being said, here's what I did to make kettle corn without burning the sugar. 1. Put sugar and half the salt in pot with just enough water to wet the sugar, then turn on medium heat (I think this is the key step in the process). 2. Let the sugar melt and start to bubble. Add the corn and the oil. 3. Shake the pot to keep things moving and evenly heat the corn and the sugar/oil solution. 4. When the popping slows (1 to 2 pops per second) remove the pot from the heat and spray the outside and bottom of the pot with water at the sink. Be careful not to burn yourself with the resulting steam! 5. Transfer the popped corn to a suitable container for consumption. I've done it this way twice on my gas stove on medium heat with no burnt sugar. Just a nice golden color to the sugar coated corn. I hope this technique works for you too.Read more
